Title: The Slavery Issue

1
The Slavery Issue
  • Chapter 13, Lesson 2

2
Slavery Life
  • The slave codes shaped day-to-day life. The
    slave codes restricted slaves rights.
  • Slaves were watched as they worked and punished
    by an overseer for wrongdoing.
  • For survival, slaves formed small communities for
comfort and support. They tried to keep
traditions alive by singing spirituals and
    talking about life in Africa.

3
Slavery Resistance
  • Some slaves resisted slavery quietly by breaking
    tools and taking things.
  • Some slaves, like Nat Turner, rebelled violently
and led slaves against their masters.
  • John Brown, an abolitionist, led a rebellion at
    Harpers Ferry.
  • Some slaves chose to try and run away. The
Underground Railroad was a system of escape
    routes.

4
Freed Slaves
  • Some freed Africans lived in cities in the North,
    hoping to find jobs.
  • Life was hard--slaves could not vote or meet in
groups. They could not attend school or hold
    certain jobs.
  • Many freed slaves were accused of being runaways
    and then sold into slavery.
