Worldliness
Modesty
3
1 Timothy 29-10
1 Timothy 29-10 (NKJV) 9 Likewise, I want
women to adorn themselves with proper clothing,
modestly and discreetly, not with braided hair
and gold or pearls or costly garments  10 but,
which is proper for women professing godliness,
with good works.
4
A Gentle Appeal
  • To Think
  • To Look at self
  • Realize

I could be wrong. Some of my clothing could be
immodest.
5
Considering the Alternatives
  • Some view immodesty as totally subjective. No
absolute rules apply. Modesty is determined
solely by the styles of the day. Everyone does
what is right in their own eyes. No sin.
  • However, the Bible says that some dress is
definitely immodest. Thus, a violation of Gods
will in regard to dress is sin.
  • Since all sin is lawlessness (1 Jn 34), the
limits of immodesty are determined by statements
and principles found in Gods revelation (law).

6
  • Can we (must we)KNOW what constitutes the sin
    of immodesty?

7
A Needed Topic
  • Our culture is out-of-control.
  • Americans have been so bombarded with sensuality
that they have lost the ability to be ashamed.

8
Jeremiah 812
  • Were they ashamed when they had committed
abomination? No! They were not at all ashamed,
Nor did they know how to blush. Therefore they
shall fall among those who fall In the time of
their punishment they shall be cast down, says
    the LORD.
  • The fact that one is not ashamed to wear a
particular outfit does not mean it is O.K. Some
are not ashamed, but they should be!

9
A Needed Topic
  • Some foolishly argue that our world has become so
corrupt that no one notices immodest clothing.
  • Someone better tell the sexperts in advertising!
They clearly understand that the lust of the
flesh and the lust of the eyes still captivate
    their audience.

10
Our Dress Can Affect Others
  • Man can easily lust (Matt. 528 Prov. 625)
  • Attire of a harlot (Prov. 710)
  • David saw Bathsheba lusted (2 Sam. 11)
  • Mary Quant (designer of mini-skirt)
Mini-clothes are symbolic of those women who
    want to seduce a man

11
A Refreshing Topic
  • I believe there are many young people (and
non-Christians!) that are tired of the constant
    barrage of sensuality.

12
A Refreshing Topic
  • I believe there are many women who are tired of
feeling inadequate or unattractive because they
are constantly confronted with societys vision
    of the ideal body type.

13
A Refreshing Topic
  • I believe there are many men who are equally
tired of the constant bombardment of temptation
that comes from observing one scantily clad woman
    after another.

14
Reasons People Dress Immodestly
  • Untaught dont know (babes 1Pet 22)
  • Want to fit in (conform Rom. 121-2)
  • Want to turn heads (vain Prov. 3130)
  • Careless dont think (foolish Eph. 517)
  • dont meditate on Divine principles
  • worlds standards carry heavy influence
  • brethren gradually get looser
  • Dont realize how they look (lets help them!)

15
Reasons People Dress Immodestly
  • Some Christians dress immodestly because they
    simply do not care.
  • No one, including God, is going to tell them how
    to dress!
  • Repent, and turn.

To Dress Modestly Means
Summary
  • to dress in a proper and respectable manner
  • with a sense of shame if others were either to
think about you sexually because of your
revealing clothing, or think of you as worldly
because of your expensive or flashy attire.
  • using good judgment and self-control to insure
that others do not face such temptations
  • so that what you wear will never cause people to
question your fear of and commitment to the Lord.

21
What Does The Bible Say?
  • Where Do I Draw The LINE?
  • What Clothing Should I NOT Wear?
  • How Can I KNOW Exactly What God Expects Me To
    Wear?

22
From The Beginning
  • Naked, no shame before sin (Gen. 225)
  • When shame recognized, man sought to cover
    nakedness (37)
  • First clothing attempted was insufficient to
    cover nakedness (310)
  • Gods covering clothed them (321)
  • Note Just as with marriage, this must be seen
    as establishing the original order.

23
The First Clothes
Genesis 3
24
Mans Apron
  • Hebrew hagora - girdle, belt, loincloth
  • A covering for the loins (Jer. 131-4)
  • Thighs and tummy were uncovered equivalent of
    modern shorts or miniskirt
  • Completely naked before apron still called
    naked AFTER apron!

25
Gods Tunic
  • Hebrew kuttonet - a tunic generally with
sleeves, coming down to the knees, rarely to the
    ankles (Gesenius, 420 Harris, I459 BDB, 509)
  • Greek (LXX) chiton - garment covering shoulders
to knees, sometimes longer (Gen. 373)
  • Original ISBE (Dress) says chiton resembled
the Roman tunic, corresponding most nearly to our
long shirt, reaching below the knee always, and,
in case it was designed for dress occasions,
reaching almost to the ground (I.S.B.E.,
    II877).

26
Nakedness
Complete Nudity
Partial Nudity
Unclad, without clothing (Thayer, p. 122)
Ill-clad or clad in undergarment only
(Thayer, p. 122) badly clad or not fully
clothed (Kittle, I773-774) lightly clad
(Liddell Scott, 170)
Point One can have some clothing on and still
be naked
27
