- Winning Students has four objectives
- To support talented student athletes to progress
along the performance pathway. - To enhance the levels of success of talented
student athletes in international competitions. - To enhance the extent and quality of partnership
working between governing bodies of sport and
tertiary education. - To enhance the capability of tertiary education
to cater for the needs of talented student
athletes as flexibly as possible.
2The place of Winning Students in the sports
performance system
- Strengthen the existing British system
- Working closely with all agencies involved in
high performance sport - Complement, supplement and add value
- Tertiary education to play a greater role in the
existing performance network
3Eligibility criteria for sports(Probably
historical)
- ESTABLISHED SPORTS (Universities/colleges and
sport involved in the performance system) - Appropriate infrastructure exists
- Partnerships exist
- Sufficient participation
- Scholarships exist
- SGB with effective governance
- SGB with robust performance system
- SGB actively encouraging athletes to train and
study in Scotland - Achieve international success

5General eligibility criteria for student athletes
- Have a British passport
- Undertaking a recognised education programme at a
college or university in Scotland funded by the
Scottish Funding Council - Able to represent Great Britain and/or Scotland
in chosen sport - Student athletes aged between 16 and 28 years
old. - Disabled student athletes aged between 16 and 35
years old.
6Educational eligibility criteria
- Over statutory school age.
- Studying at an institution that holds membership
of the Winning Students network. - Be registered on a recognised education programme
at a college or university in Scotland funded by
the Scottish Funding Council. - Student athletes studying in colleges in Scotland
funded by the Scottish Funding Council must be
registered on a recognised course of study that
involves at least seven hours of course delivery
time per week. - Student athletes studying in universities in
Scotland funded by the Scottish Funding Council
must meet BUCS eligibility criteria.
7Sports Specific Criteria
- Student athletes will be nominated by their
national governing body of sport in accordance
with agreed selection criteria - For Example
- Swimming National Senior Gold Squad
- Hockey Senior Scotland National Squad
- Orienteering Members of British Orienteering
Performance Squad, Talent Squad or Scottish Elite
Development Squad Performance Group.

- Institution-wide commitment to provide flexible
academic study - Programme management
- A member of staff to manage and administer the
institutions Winning Students programme and to
provide support to access academic flexibility - Financial management
- Marketing and promotion
- Commitment to promote Winning Students through
appropriate methods - General infrastructure
- Child protection policy, staff have enhanced
disclosures from Disclosure Scotland and first
aid available on site - Formal partnership agreement
- All host institutions must enter a partnership
agreement with SUSE, which sets out the
responsibilities of each party

- Compliance with access agreements and
achievements of objectives of national training
centres in universities/colleges. - Attractiveness to students thinking of studying
beyond Scotland. - Commitments of Winning Student students to
compete in Scottish and British student
competitions. - Gravitational pull and the Scottish sportscape.
- Making appropriate and effective contributions to
national governing bodies of sport. - Unlocking tertiary educations resources for the
