What is documentation?
  • A broad range of documentation (videos, tape
    recordings, written notes, photos, childrens
products etc.) produced and used IN PROCESS (that
is during the experience) to make teaching
decisions, as well as after the experience as
    assessment and communication.
  • The process of interpreting and analyzing the
documents is often from multiple perspectives
with the goal of revealing teaching and learning.

47
  • it makes visible the nature of the learning
processes and strategies used by each child (or
the group), including the subjective and
    intersubjective processes
  • It enables reading, revisiting, and assessment in
time and space and these actions become an
integral part of the knowledge-building process
  • It is essential for metacognitive processes and
for the understanding of children and adults

Our lessons
  • Learning to look and listen closely to see
    childrens capacities and document them
  • Extending our confidence as mediators of
    experience
  • Not opposing play and intentionality but
    integrating them
  • Paying more attention to our environments
  • and extending the range of materials that we
    offer them

82
Project work
  • Seeing projects (extended experiences) as viable
    for infants and toddlers
  • Seeing projects as emerging in daily life (e.g.,
    construction), developmental tasks (e.g., rough
and tumble), cultural interests (e.g., literacy)
and adult provocations (e.g., using glue)
  • Understanding the role of teacher inquiry and
    documentation in supporting projects

83
Where do we go now?
  • Our new transformative space in Weinland Park
  • Co-constructing new pedagogies with our new
    partners
