Title: Healthy Eating

1
Healthy Eating
2
  • Each student completed a food diary for one week,
to record their daily eating habits.
  • The students then inputted their food diary
information into a database throughout the week.
  • I made multiple copies of the food diary database
so each student had access to all the data at
    each computer.

Project
3
  • Each student highlighted their own food diary
information from the database then copied it into
    their own spreadsheet.
  • They learnt how to build formulas to find out
the average and totals of their data.
  • They all created a pie graph of their average
    daily servings.
  • They typed in the ideal daily servings for each
food type and created a bar graph to show their
average food intake compared to the ideal.

4
Thinking Hats
  • The students used the 6 Thinking Hats to analyse
their graphs comment on their eating habits, and
possible changes they could make to have a
    healthier food intake.

Inquiry Skills
  • Defining - Collecting data.
  • Organising/Synthesising - Using the Database and
Spreadsheet to input and organise data.
  • Selecting/Analysing - Using the 6 Thinking hats
    to analyse their graphs.
  • Presenting- Creating their graphs.
  • Evaluating - Using the 6 Thinking hats to
evaluate their eating habits and comment on how
effective the project was towards looking at what
they eat, and compare it to the ideal.

Reflection
  • Working with half the class at a time made
    management a lot easier.
  • I utilised students who were On to it as
    helpers.
  • I did not use Pivot tables, as the students had
learnt quite enough in 6 sessions.
  • Next time I would get the kids gather 2 weeks
    data and input the average.
  • Now that the students have the skills and
knowledge, I hope they will use what they have
learnt next year, possibly in their Science fair
    project.
