  • This is a one day integrated unit plan that will
    include lessons in history, reading, writing,
    math and science.

Math and Science
  • The math and science teachers on my team will
    plan lessons that connect to this theme. They
    tell me the lessons will include

Synopsis of History Lesson
  • Students will compare and contrast photographs of
    blizzards today and in the past.

Synopsis of Reading Lesson
  • Students will read a variety of selections about
    blizzards and/or snow. The teacher will provide
    photography from LOC to help illustrate the
    various selections.
  • Poetry Poems selected will focus on famous
    American poets.

Synopsis of Writing Lesson
  • Activity

  • The teacher will print a number of photographs
    from LOC prior to class.
  • Each student will select one picture that
    interests them and complete the Photographic
    Analysis worksheet.
  • Students that selected the same picture will
    discuss the things they noticed about the picture
    and share with the class.

Assessment
  • Students will complete a writing assignment.
    They will be encouraged to use one of the
    photographs as the basis for their writing, and
    use it as an illustration.
  • Students will choose one of the following writing
    prompts.
  • Poetry Write a poem about snow, blizzards
    and/or Chicago.
  • Fiction Write a story based on one of the
    photos you liked.
  • Fiction Write a narrative essay about one of
    the people in a photograph you observed.
  • Non-Fiction Write a narrative essay about your
    favorite snow day.
  • Non-Fiction Write a newspaper article about
    todays snow storm.
