Title: Technology

1
Technology
  • International Baccalaureate
  • Middle Years Programme

2
Introduction
  • Technology technological developments have
given rise to profound changes in society,
    transforming how we access process
information, how we communicate with others how
    we work solve problems.

3
  • The MYP holistic approach to teaching learning
    acknowledges that inquiry problem solving
contribute to students development of thinking
skills strategies that will equip them to face
the rapidly changing demands of the 21st century.

4
  • MYP technology aims to provide the means the
context to help students become skillful problem
solvers, who can appreciate the role of
technology in everyday life society who can
    respond critically resourcefully to real-life
    challenges.

5
  • The MYP technology course intends to
  • Challenge all students to apply practical
creative-thinking skills to solve problems in
    technology
  • Encourage students to explore the role of
    technology in both historical contemporary
    contexts
  • Raise students awareness of their
responsibilities as world citizens when making
decisions taking action on technology issues.

6
Characteristics
  • Technology is one of the 8 subject groups in the
MYP with defined aims, objectives assessment
    criteria.

7
The Design Cycle
8
  • MYP technology uses the design cycle as the model
of thinking the strategy to help students
    investigate problems design, plan, create
    evaluate the products/solutions that they
    generate.

9
Product / Solution
  • Model
  • Prototype
  • Product
  • Systemthat students have generated independently

10
MYP technology branches
  • Information
  • Materials
  • Systems

11
Information
  • MYP technology enables students to
  • identify
  • access
  • evaluate
  • acknowledge a wide range of information sources.
  • Use and/or communicate information to
  • perform a task
  • achieve a purpose
  • meet a need
  • solve a problem
  • Information-based products/solutions often
    involve computer technology, e.g.
  • desktop publishing (DTP)
  • multimedia packages
  • web pages

12
Materials
  • In many cases creating a product/solution
    involves using materials.
  • Students are learning to
  • identify
  • combine
  • experiment with
  • shape
  • handle different types of materials
  • safely dispose of, or recycle, waste products.
  • Some materials that the students will work with
    include
  • Natural (wood, cotton fabric, wool, silk,)
    and/or
  • Synthetic (metals, acrylic, plastic, acetate,)

13
Systems
  • A group of interdependent items that interact
regularly to perform a task or achieve a
    purpose.
  •  These items are
  • Materials
  • components or
  • information that have been incorporated into a
system in order to provide a solution to a
    problem.
  • Some examples include
  • Microchip
  • Ballpoint pen
  • Plotter
  • Fire-drill procedures
  • Simple electrical circuits
  • Students recognize the parts of a system (input,
processing control, and output) as well as the
crucial role each component plays as part of the
    whole.

14
The Curriculum
  • MYP earlier years
  • simple units of work
  • skills development
  • limited range of outcomes
  • guided project content
  • short projects
  • students designing for themselves
  • emphasis placed on individual parts of the design
    cycle
  • contrived challenges
  • to MYP final years
  • to complex units of work
  • to skills applied to design situations
  • to open-ended challenges
  • to student-managed projects
  • to long projects
  • to students designing for others
  • to all stages of the design cycle fully
    addressed
  • to real-life challenges

15
Design Folder
  • Is a compulsory component of MYP technology
  • Is a compilation of evidence that accompanies the
final product/solution for a unit of work

DT Projects for this academic year Grade 8
  • Jewellery

  • Making light work

17
Jewellery
  • we are planning to take the students to a local
artists workshop where they will be able to
produce their designs in metal and a variety of
materials. The project will ask students to
consider the symmetry and balance of the human
    figure as inspiration.

18
Illustration
  • also for this project we will use the facilities
of a local printmaker to create the cover of a
storybook or comic that the students will write
and draw. This will help them to develop the
skills to produce sequential imagery and
    narrative.

19
Making light work
  • students look at the function of light, its
history and how indispensable it has become to
our everyday life. Then they will begin to design
one of their own, either for themselves or to
benefit others in a meaningful way.

21
Spreadsheet Quiz
  • The spreadsheet quiz unit extends the students
knowledge and abilities in using spreadsheet
software. Building on previous knowledge the
students learn some of the deeper functionality
of Microsoft Excel such as Conditional
Functions. In this fun project the students get
    to develop their own quiz.

22
Sketchup
  • Sketchup is a great computer design tool
developed by Google. Students get to design their
    own bedrooms.

23
Photoshop
  • Students learn about digital imaging and
manipulation software and ultimately build on
what they have learned from DT to come up with
    some interesting digital logos.

24
Assessment will be based on the following
criteria
  • Investigation,
  • designing,
  • planning,
  • creating,
  • evaluating,
  • attitudes displayed in technology.
