Writing a letter to the Editor
  • Reading skills a must in 21st century
  • Kudos to The State for recognizing the critical
need for reading in South Carolina (Reading a
good gift any time of year, Thursday). Wonderful
initiatives are occurring across the state.
  • Yet, many educators and parents have not realized
that literacy means more than words on a page. A
perfect example is the trend toward more people
reading on-line. The State certainly understands
    this movement.
  • Todays young people also pay more attention to
visual media. Still, most teachers dont fully
understand how to teach the languages of media.
Current research shows that when educators have
been trained in how to engage young people in
their culture and media, those same
deconstruction skills can easily transfer to
    their print analysis.
  • The move toward 21st century literacies is one
already embraced by North Carolina, whose
governor has created the nations first Center
for 21st Century Skills. South Carolina would be
wise to do the same, thus enabling students here
to be prepared for 21st century jobs.
  • FRANK W. BAKER
  • Columbia
  • The State paper January 4, 2009
  • Story has inaccurate facts, praise/criticize a
    recent article.
  • Research publication for word count, submission
    process.
  • Write persuasively, include local statistics and
    personal stories.
  • Stick to one major point.
  • Include name, address, and phone number.

12
Writing an Opinion Editorial
  • Research and find opportunities to write pieces.
  • Decide on a topic
  • Approach the editors
  • Prepare and submit a draft
