  • three types of questions

    are from (write it down)
  • What they would like to cover / know about?
  • Where did they get their information?

  • I have a different viewpoint.
  • The question really is
  • I would put it this way
  • More importantly
  • The bigger concern to me is..

Interview preparation
  • Example
  • Reporter So why wont you divulge the terms of
    the sale?
  • Answer Its proprietary information
  • Better answer As is the case with many private
business transactions, the terms are not public,
but I can tell you that this sale is positive for
    the company and the community.

28
Interview Preparation
  • Prepare for inappropriate questions
  • Im sorry I cant answer that because.
  • I do not work in that area and dont have the
    knowledge to answer that

29
Interview Preparation
  • I dont know the answer to that, but I will look
into it and get back to you.
  • There are many misconceptions about
that..unfortunately, we do not have time to go
into that right now. Id love to talk with you
    later

30
Dressing For Success
  • You have 5 seconds to make a good impression
  • You want them to hear what youre saying, not
    stare at what youre wearing

  • Dont be a blabbermouth

41
One Big DO
  • Do tell the truth
  • You dont have to tell all but you do have to
    tell the truth

After The Interview

accompany the reporter/photographer at all times
  • Offer to make yourself available by phone if they
    have further questions

    and/or news director
  • If you didnt like it, dont panic!
  • call/write the reporter

44
After the Story Appears
  • Corrections
  • Not likely unless a major fact is misstated
  • Still, call the reporter and ask that their Web
site as well as the archive/record are changed to
    reflect the accurate information

45
And finally..
  • The more interviews you do, the more
comfortable youll become and the more in control
