3
Overview
  • NCTM Standards
  • Geometry 6-8
  • Analyze characteristics and properties of two-
    and three-dimensional geometric shapes and
    develop mathematical arguments about geometric
    relationships
  • Understand relationships among the angles, side
lengths, perimeters, areas, and volumes of
    similar objects
  • Use visualization, spatial reasoning, and
    geometric modeling to solve problems
  • Draw geometric objects with specified properties,
such as side lengths or angle measures
  • Assessment
  • Students will be assessed on their completion of
their worksheet, accuracy of information about
    quadrilaterals, and understanding the properties
    of different quadrilaterals.

6
Introduction
  • This topic splash activity is designed to
introduce you to quadrilaterals. You will be
introduced to three different types of four-sided
    polygons, rectangles, parallelograms, and
trapezoids. You will search the internet to
complete the worksheet and answer questions based
on each one of these quadrilaterals. You will
then work in groups and create your own
    quadrilateral using the internet.

7
Internet Activities
  • Floor Tiles

8
Quadrilaterals
  • Rectangle
  • Quadrilaterals - Square, Rectangle, Rhombus,
    Trapezoid, Parallelogram
  • Isosceles Trapezoid
  • Complete the Quadrilateral Worksheet. To find
the properties and definition of a rectangle,
rhombus, and parallelogram, visit these websites.
  • Before doing this, visit the Floor Tiles website.

9
Conclusion/Extensions
  • You will now be able to connect your knowledge
of angles, lines, and congruency to many
    different polygons, now including quadrilaterals.
  • Discussion of the importance of knowing the
    characteristics of different types of
    quadrilaterals.
  • To learn more about properties of quadrilaterals,
    visit these websites
  • Polygons - Quadrilaterals - First Glance
  • The Quadrilateral Family
  • Figures and polygons

Worksheet on Quadrilaterals
  • Chart
  • A rectangle has ___ pairs of parallel sides, ___
pairs of equal sides, and ___ right angles. Can
you create a rectangle using the Floor Tiles
    Activity?
  • Using the information button, can you show that
what you made is a rectangle? Show that you have
the necessary characteristics of a rectangle.
    Show and explain your work.
  • A rhombus has ___ pairs of parallel sides, ___
equal sides, and ___ pairs of congruent angles.
Can you create a rhombus with the Floor Tiles
    Activity?
  • Using the information button, can you show that
what you made is a rhombus? Show that you have
the necessary characteristics of a rhombus. Show
    and explain your work.
  • An isosceles trapezoid has ___ pairs of parallel
sides, ___ equal sides, and ___ pairs of
congruent angles. Can you create an isosceles
trapezoid with the Floor Tiles Activity?
  • Using the information button, can you show that
what you created is an isosceles trapezoid. Show
    and explain your work.
