WASL Changes for 2005-2006
  • We will get scores back from the WASL reading and
    math at grades 3,5, 6, 8
  • Freshmen can voluntarily take the WASL. If they
meet standard, they dont need to take it again.
Juniors and seniors can retake it to improve
    their scores.
  • HS students will take reading and writing in
March, math and science in April-May.
  • Most importantly the class of 2008, current
sophomores, must meet standard on the WASL in
order to graduate. If they dont meet standard
this year, they will have 4 more opportunities to
    take it.

MERCER ISLAND SCHOOL DISTRICT 400Board of
Directors MeetingJune 23, 2005Report of
Results on Iowa Test of Basic Skills from Spring
2005Background InformationIn March of this
year all Mercer Island students in grades 3 and 6
took the Iowa Test of Basic Skills (ITBS) as part
of the state testing program.Districtwide at
grades 3 and 6, our students this year generally
gained one or two percentile points in all areas
except for math in grade 6 which is up four
percentiles. Generally, a 5 percentile change is
considered statistically significant but a gain
of 3-4 points, if sustained, is definitely a
meaningful gain. A detailed report is
attached. Results on the Iowa Test of Educational
Development (ITED) taken in April in grade 9 will
be released by the state in August. This is the
last year that ITBS and ITED will be part of the
state testing program.
