Project
  • Commercial product reliability driven by
    liability, coast goals, competitions etc..
  • Military system reliability the system must be
    highly reliable, available and maintainable.
  • Mean Time Between Critical Failures (MTBCF) is
used as the mission reliability metric.
  • Mean Time Between Failure (MTBF) is used as the
    logistics reliability metric.
  • Look at the differences in the resulting system
reliability and see if the numbers are acceptable
  • If the system or product does not include
    redundancy, these metrics are equal.

3
Definitions
  • MTBCF Measure of a systems ability to complete
a mission, its use in the case where components
are replaced and not repaired. Its improved by
    redundancy.
  • MTBF Measure of a systems ability to operate
without logistics support, its use in application
that permit repairs and its degraded by
    redundancy.
  • Reliability Ability of a system to perform a
specified task, for a specified time, in a
    specified environment.
  • Failure Lack of ability of a component,
equipment, sub system, or system to perform its
intended function. There is four categories
    Catastrophic, Critical, Marginal, Minor
