  • Dr. Tedesco/CEES work in reservoirs
  • Senator Gards call for coordinated approach to
    examining this issue

4
What We Have Learned
  • Traditional assumptions of when algae blooms
    occur have been challenged.
  • Nutrient loadings from a variety of sources,
    including residential, agricultural, point
    sources contribute to the problem.
  • Existence of cell counts does not necessarily
    imply high toxin levels.
  • High toxin levels can occur with low cell counts.

5
Statewide Coordination
  • IDEM has partnered with DNR, ISDH,
Indianapolis/Veolia Water, and IUPUIs Center for
the Earth and Environmental Sciences (CEES) to
    monitor local reservoirs.
  • IDEM/ISDH partner on Blue Green Algae level
advisories to provide public with information.

World Health Organization Thresholds
Reporting To the Public

    IDEM
  • www.in.gov/idem/algae
  • Provide public with Information about
  • Toxins from algae
  • Risks associated with toxins
  • Precautions you can take
