- eSecurity is the securing of information that is
stored electronically such as on computer
networks - eSecurity can also refer to security measures
taken while using electronic media such as email
and the Internet.

6Quick Definitions
- Viruses
- A virus is a piece of malicious software code
written to cause some kind of damage to a
computer system or network or even the Internet
itself. - Adware
- Adware is a program that installs itself on your
computer and creates popup ads to appear when you
are surfing the net, based on past behaviours. - Spyware
- Spyware is more malicious is designed to steal
something from you usually information!
7E-mail Hoaxes Scams
- Often urban legends or scams
- May trick you into forwarding messages about fake
viruses and other fabricated stories - Common email scams include
- Work from Home offers
- E-mails claiming to be from your bank, or PayPal
or eBay - Congratulations you have won a lottery even
though you havent entered any!
87 Telltale Signs of a Scam
- You dont know the person who has sent the
message - You are promised untold sums of money for little
or no effort on your part - You are asked to provide money upfront for
questionable activities, a processing fee, or the
pay the cost of expediting the process - You are asked to provide your bank account number
or other personal financial information, even if
the sender offers to deposit money into it - The request contains a sense of urgency
- The sender repeatedly requests confidentiality
- The sender offers to send you photocopies of
government certificate, banking information or
other evidence that their activity is
legitimate (these are fake)

- How much memory does it require to run?
- More than 64Mb and it will make your computer
slow - How often does it receive updates?
- Should receive updates at least once a day
- How much is it the renew the subscription each
year? - Dont pay too much for renewals each year
10Tips For Preventing Spyware
- Dont download free software unless you are
100 sure it is from a reputable company - Dont use pirated software or purchase heavily
discounted software - Dont download the free screensavers, or smiley
icons for your emails - Where possible, let your kids use a different
computer from the one you do on-line banking with
11Handling E-Mail Hoaxes Spam
- If you dont know the sender DONT OPEN IT
- Turn off the Preview Mode in Outlook this opens
the email anyway and activates any hidden viruses
or Spyware - See if your ISP has a spam filter you can access
- Use Hotmail accounts when filling out online
forms and only give your personal email out to
close friends and family - Dont spread it think twice before forwarding
on funny emails or possible email hoaxes
