What is the name of your ranch? VJV for my
family. Which trail will you use on your cattle
drives? and Why? Goodnight Loving It is
dangerous but the Army pays well and I share that
with you. Where in Texas is your ranch? and Why?
My ranch is near Fort Davis in the Davis
Mountains. With the Army nearby, we are well
protected from Apache raids. What land, water and
food resources are available for your cattle?
We have Limpia Creek for water and there is
plenty of grass and shade trees. What is the
weather like? We have beautiful starry skies and
great weather. Mostly the highs are in the upper
80s in the summer and the lows in winter are in
the mid 20s. We get about 15 inches of rain per
year. What breed of cattle do you raise? We raise
Texas Longhorns a very hardy breed. What brand
will you use to identify your cattle? The VJV
brand on the other side. How many head of cattle
are on your ranch and how many will you drive to
market? We have about 2000 head of cattle. Each
year we drive about 1000 to the Forts along the
G-L trail selling about 200 at each stop. What
supplies and essentials will you be providing to
the cowhands who work for you? You will receive
food, tack, a bedroll, a new pair of boots, and a
hat. How many cowhands will you hire? I will be
hiring 10 new trail hands, a new cook and trail
boss. How many will be expected to work on the
cattle drives? All will be for the drive. What
jobs are available on your ranch and on the
cattle drives? I dont have any new positions for
my ranch. Im just hiring for the trail
drive. How much will you pay for the various
jobs? Monthly wages will run about 40 for
experienced cowboys, up to 75 for cooks, to more
than 100 monthly for the trail bosses. What are
the risks facing cowboys who work for you? Will
you provide insurance? If so, what kind? There
are lots of risks falling off your horse,
stampeding cattle, rattlesnakes, coyotes and
cougars, Apache raiders, to name just a few.
Sorry no health insurance. Plenty of adventure
though!
