Samuel ColtGod created all men, and Sam Colt

As a boy, Colt would disassemble and
reassemble fathers firearms to learn
how they worked. At 15, he found a
ship, signed on as a sailor,
and went to sea. According to legends,
Colt developed his idea for a
revolving cylinder pistol at sea while either
watching the ships wheel or capstanturn.

Not having enough money to make models of his
gun, Colt took it upon himself to gain a basic
knowledge of chemistry from a bleaching/dyeing
department manager at his fathers factory.
He then used this knowledge to travel the country
lecturing on chemistry and administering nitrous
oxide gas to volunteers for entertainment.
Once Colt earned money to construct the pistol,
he made models and took out patents.

Rangers in defeating the Indians with the
Paterson Colt (1836-1842) brought attention to
the Army who eventually wanted them for Mexican
War help.
Colt built his reputation thanks to the success
of Texas Rangers.

1847 Colt contacted Capt. Samuel Walker of U.S.
Army to purchase revolvers. Walker eagerly
accepted, giving Colt the boost necessary to once
again focus on producing firearms.
Without your pistols we would not have had the
confidence to have undertaken such daring
adventures...With improvements I think they can
be rendered the most perfect weapon in the World
for light mounted troops...The people throughout
Texas are anxious to procure your
pistols. -Capt. Samuel Walker

I am working on my own hook and have sole
control and management of my business and intend
to keep it as long as I live without being
subject to the whims of a pack of dam fools and
knaves styling themselves a board of
directors...my arms sustain a high reputation
among men of brains in Mexico and...now is the
time to make money out of them.
After delivering the thousand revolvers to
Walkers army, Colt proceeded to borrow 5,000
from his cousin, lease a factory, and mass
produce a promise of 5,000 revolvers a year.
