• The Family is the primary social institution
  without it there would be no society!!
• The Family is the most important social
  institution without it human survival is
  impossible!!
• Families take many forms, but all consist of
  people living together in mutual support and
  taking mutual responsibility for the household
• Goal Survival of the species

Responsibilities of the Family

• Primary Needs
• raising children
• protection, security
• sustenance
• food, clothing, shelter
• acculturation

• Secondary Needs
• emotional support
• love and empathy
• companionship
• group membership

Families are Everywhere!

• Families exist in all cultures
• Families take on many forms all are equally
  valuable
• All families provide the same services to family
  members!

Kinship The Ties that Bind

• Kinship represents the relationships between
  individuals that determine family ties
• Kinship defines responsibilities to family
  members
• Patriarchal descent follows the male (male
  dominated)
• Matriarchaldescent follows the female (female
  dominated)
• Most societies are patriarchal

• Nuclear
• Father, Mother, Children
• Extended
• includes other relatives, grandparents, aunts,
  uncles etc.
• Single-Parent
• Non-Traditional
• gay lesbian, non-related, all others

Adolescence in the United States

• Until the end of World War II, it did not
  officially exist
• Greater wealth and leisure time created the
  adolescent phenomena
• Teen years are full of change, emerging
  independence

Marriage, In-Laws and Extended Family

• Marriage rates in the US are consistently high
  except during wartime and depression
• More than 90 of all Americans will marry at
  least once in their lives
• Today men and women are delaying marriage in
  order to work.Avg age for men- 28, women26
• Cohabitation featuring unmarried partners is also
  on the upswing.
• Over 50 of all marriages end in divorce
  divorced people usually remarry within 10 years
  of divorce!
