Problem Statement
  • Modern homes have many appliances
  • Operated manually
  • A way is needed to automate appliances
  • Operated via a computer
  • Connected by Ethernet network
  • Remote Controlled
  • Controlled over the internet
  • Provides security, convenience, and protection

Hardware Design
  • Communicate with controlling computer
  • Communications Hardware
  • Physical Layer
  • Implement IP Stack ARP, ICMP, UDP
  • Interpret Commands
  • Receive UDP/IP packets
  • Read external input (buttons switches)
  • Execute Commands

7
Outlet Module
  • Individual Outlet Control
  • 2 outlets
  • Operation Modes
  • On, off, auto
  • Push Buttons
  • On, off
  • LEDs
  • Indicate state

8
Design I Accomplishments
  • Microcontroller processes and responds to
  • ARP requests
  • ICMP pings
  • UDP control packets
  • Input from control switches
  • Control software
  • GUI generated from XML
  • Hardware control information stored in XML
  • Communicates with and controls hardware
  • Executes scheduled tasks

9
Problems
  • Relay switching from microcontroller not
    implemented
  • Phone access and control not implemented

10
Solutions
  • Cant drive relay directly from microcontroller
due to voltage spike from relay coil discharging
  • Use Darlington pair current amplifier to drive
    relay and prevent voltage spikes

11
New Designs
  • Allow multiple hardware units to share the same
IP and use broadcast to talk to each unit
  • Use encryption for control packets
  • Implement safety features for hardware

12
PCB Layout
13
Packaging
  • Constraints 6x4x2 plastic casing houses
  • two outlets on front
  • one outlet for back
  • two relays
  • Ethernet controller
  • PCB
  • power supply

15
Hardware Testing
  • Decrypt and encrypt control data
  • Accept, execute, and respond to control packets
    including broadcasts
  • Respond to input from external switches

16
Software Testing
  • Encrypt and decrypt control data
  • Send and receive control packets including
    broadcast packets
  • Execute scheduled events
  • Use less than 10 Megabytes of computer memory
  • Use less than 1 of processor time
