2Qualifications for teachers, tutors and trainers
in the lifelong learning sector
- New credit based teacher qualifications framework
to be in place and operative in England by Sept
2007 - Applies only to public funded (LSC) programmes
- The qualification a new entrant needs to attain
is dependent on role, not amount of time s/he is
contracted to teach - All new teachers, tutors and trainers in the
sector in England to embark on an initial award
(PTLLS) and a further qualification appropriate
to role from Sept 07
3Qualifications
Qualifications developed within a credit based
framework
- Initial Award for all teachers
- Minimum level 3
- Mandatory 6 credit unit (30 contact hours)
- Awarded or embedded
- Certificate for teachers in a role with limited
responsibilities - Includes initial award
- Available at level 3 and level 4
- 24 36 credits (18 mandatory)
- Diploma for teachers in a full teaching role
- Includes initial award
- Minimum level 5
- 120 credits (90 mandatory)
4Award in Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong
Learning Sector (PTLLS)
- Confers threshold status to teach - September
2007 - Literacy, numeracy and ICT needs identified
- Minimum level three
- Minimum 30 guided learning hours 30 hours self
directed learning - At the beginning of your teaching career
- Observed practice (- can be micro teaching)
- Tests and trials LLUK Construction tutors, East
of England Train to Gain, NW LSC ESF projects
5Certificate in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning
Sector
- Offered at level three and four
- Up to 5 years to complete
- Minimum 24 credits
- Can be contextualised, and offer specialist
optional elements - Same requirement for excellence in practice
- Associate teacher has fewer responsibilities e.g.
predominantly teaches - From pre-prepared materials
- On a one to one basis
- Short courses
- A subject confined to a single subject, level or
type of learner - (NB Does not include specialist teachers who
perform the full teacher role)
6The Certificate contextualising the
qualification
- The reformed Initial Teacher Training (ITT)
pathways will see all teachers, trainers,
lecturers and instructors working toward either
Associate Teacher, Learning and Skills (ATLS)
status or Qualified Teacher, Learning and Skills
(QTLS) status. - Associate Tutor role PTLLS CTLLS Pathway 3 or 4
- Police and Probation Service pilots
- Fit for purpose police contextualised units
e.g. mandatory Diversity and Equality
7Other relevant awards under development
- Learning and Development awards under review
- Certificate in Workplace Learning Level 3 with
progression pathway to ITT awards according to
role - Assessor and Verifier awards will be incorporated
as optional units - Public services examples
8Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning
Sector
- Up to 5 years to complete
- Minimum level five teaching qualification -
equivalent of Cert Ed/ PGCE - Leads to QTLS (Qualified Teacher Learning and
Skills Sector) status - National external tests in Literacy, Numeracy and
ICT under consideration - Licence to Practise conferred by Institute for
Learning (IfL) to be maintained through 30 hrs
CPD p.a. - Period of professional formation prior to gaining
QTLS
