Introduction

• Romeo and Juliet tells the story of star-crossed
  lovers who defy their parents and unite in
  marriage. Juliet, however, is supposed to be
  married to Paris, a rich relative of the Prince!
  
• So, what were marriage and wedding rituals
  really like in Elizabethan times? In order to
  better understand the society, culture, and
  people of the Elizabethan Era, you will
  participate in planning the wedding of Juliet and
  Paris.

Task

• You will work in groups of four to plan and make
  arrangements for an Elizabethan-style wedding to
  be given for Juliet and Paris. Each member of
  the wedding planning committee will choose one of
  the following roles for this project
• Caterer - provide the guests with food and drink
• Entertainment Director-provide guests with music,
  games, and fun
• Fashion Designer- design wedding attire for
  various participants of the wedding
• General Coordinator- provide insight to wedding
  and marriage customs to be expected during
  Elizabethan times and coordinate group
  presentation

You will individually research aspects of the
Elizabethan era that Correspond with your chosen
role. Based on the research, each member of the
wedding planning committee will Create a project
and then work with other members of the committee
to pitch your proposed wedding plan to the

The Process

• 1. First everyone in your wedding planning
  committee must choose a role.
• 2. Once you know what your role is, you will
  click on the role below to discover the specific
  responsibilities of that role.

• 3. When everyone on your committee has fulfilled
  the individual responsibilities, then you must
  work together to create a group presentation that
  pitches your proposal for the wedding plans.
• 4. The presentation must include an introduction
  given by the General Coordinator, information
  presented by each member of the committee about
  his specific responsibility, transitions between
  topics, and a conclusion given by the General
  Coordinator. At least one visual aid must be
  used by each member of the wedding planning
  committee during the presentation.

Caterer

• Responsibilities
• 1. You will write a 1 ½ to 2 page paper that
  explains the food and dining customs of people
  during the Elizabethan Era.
• 2. Next, you will create a full menu for the
  wedding feast at the wedding of Juliet and Paris.
• 3. Choose an authentic Elizabethan recipe for an
  item of food on the wedding feast menu. You will
  make the recipe and bring it to the presentation
  for taste-testing.

Fashion Designer

• Responsibilities
• 1. You will design authentic wedding attire for
  the following participants in Juliet and Pariss
  wedding Juliet, Paris, Lady Capulet, Lord
  Capulet, the Nurse, and Friar Laurence.
• 2. You may draw the costumes using colored
  pencils or piece them together with fabric
  (doll-size replicas).
• You will write a paragraph (8-10 sentences) for
  each characters costume that explains the
  fashion of the Elizabethan Era according to each
  characters station in life.

Entertainment Director

• Responsibilities
• 1. You will write a 1 ½ to 2 page paper that
  provides the reader with information about music,
  games, and forms of entertainment during the
  Elizabethan Era.
• 2. Select a group of at least five different
  musicians/instruments to play music at the
  wedding/wedding banquet.
• 3. Select an original Elizabethan song to be the
  official wedding song of Juliet and Paris.
• 4. Provide a list of at least five different
  activities that will be at the wedding feast. You
  will need to demonstrate one of the activities
  during your presentation.

• Responsibilities
• 1. You will write a 1 ½ to 2 page paper that
  explains the wedding customs and marriage roles
  during the Elizabethan Era.
• 2. You will create the introduction,
  transitions, and conclusion for your wedding
  committees presentation.
• 3. You will design and create a project that
  ties together all aspects of the wedding plan.
  This can be done in the form of a pamphlet,

  life during Elizabethan times in order to better

• Process
• This WebQuest will take approximately two weeks
  if using half of a 80 minute periods. The
  WebQuest is also designed to be completed while
  reading The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet.
• Step One Divide students into groups of four,
  introduce the Webquest, and allow students to
  choose roles.
• Step Two- Students should be given ample time to
  look through websites in order to gather
  information for their papers and projects.
• Step Three- Allow students class time to write
  rough and final drafts of the research report.
• Step Four- Students should have a rough design
  for the visual product. The students should make
  the actual product at home.
• Step Five- Students should collaborate with group
  members to organize and develop the final
  presentation. Practice time should be included.
• Step Six- Each group should deliver a
  presentation to the class.

  class, it can be easily modified.  Any teacher
  who wishes to use the quest as it is should have
  access to the following resources

• Possible guided notes worksheets
• Time 1-2 weeks
• While the amount of resources is fairly simply,
  the time dedicated to the WebQuest greatly
  depends on students' prior knowledge.  As it is
  written, this webquest assumes that students have
  had practice 1)researching on the Internet and 2)
  writing research reports in proper format.
