- As defined by Community-Campus Partnerships for
Health - Service Learning is a structured learning
experience that combines community service with
preparation and reflection.
8OMSL Service-Learning Model
- Service projects are voluntary rather than
course-based - Projects infused with key service-learning
elements such as reflection, orientation, and
evaluation
9Key OMSL Statistics
- 250 students per year (20 of those on the
Indianapolis campus) participate in one or more
of 16 student-initiated and student-led
service-learning projects - Over 8000 hours of service each year
- Growth from one to 16 projects in ten years

- 1989Patricia Keener, MD, IUSM faculty, appointed
medical director for Indianapolis Campaign for
Healthy Babies initiative - Two major changes resulted--
- IUSM became major provider of primary care in
inner-city neighborhood based health centers - IUSM curriculum reflected increased emphasis on
cultural competency

- Curricular changes prompted medical students to
get involved in the community - Spring House Calls, the first student-led project
was developed in 1996 and became the model for
future projects - Student Advisory Group formed in 1999 to serve as
a forum for student discussion, policy making and
leadership development.

- In 1999, Dr. Keener appointed as Assistant Dean
for Medical Service-Learning - In 1999, OMSL officially recognized by the IUSM
administration

encourage and support student participation. - OMSL is a primary means for IUSM to meet this
standard

(nine) required competencies - Students must achieve basic and intermediate
proficiency in all 9 areas and advanced
proficiency in 3 areas.

marketing, budgeting, fund-raising expertise - Maintain all financial records and ensure
projects follow accepted accounting principles - Work behind the scenes to help ensure projects go
