History and last Workshop
3
History
  • In October 2003 we had a very successful First
Workshop in Boston co-hosted by MIT and DLR
  • European Commission, EUROCONTROL, NASA, FAA,
    other users and researchers
  • Objective Sharing and mutual understanding of
what is done in the US and Europe
  • Presentations available on CD
  • In 2004 Dres Zellweger asked for an Action Plan
on Airport Surface Research and Development under
    the FAA-EUROCONTROL Memorandum of Cooperation
  • The Action Plan 21 Surface Operations Research
    Advanced-Surface Movement Guidance and Control
    System and Collaborative Decision-Making
(A-SMGCS CDM) was drafted by a small team and
    approved in January 2005
  • Second workshop was held in October 2005 at DLR
  • Objective An update to research efforts among
    the researchers in Surface Management

4
Benefits of collaboration across the Atlantic
Ocean
  • Exchange, cross-checking and analysis of ideas
    and views
  • Harmonization of research and implementation is
easier if we work together in the early stages of
    development
  • Possibility to discuss developed approaches at an
early stage with users that might have different
    requirements
  • Working across borders and different cultures can
be very motivating for scientists and can help
    foster new research ideas
  • Safe, efficient and green air transport is a
    global challenge
  • Globally interoperability is required by airspace
    users

5

Objectives of this Workshop
  • Mutual Understanding of
  • State-of-the-art
  • User needs
  • Operational concepts
  • Current research plans
  • Future plans
  • Bring together from US and Europe (and maybe Asia
    in the future?)
  • Research and development people in this domain
  • Airspace users, service providers, airport
    operators
  • Decision-makers

14
Workshop Focus Areas
  • Surface optimization
  • Modeling for the surface
  • Experiences with the early surface concepts and
    tools
  • Performance metrics and experiences
  • Emphasis is upon discussion and collaboration

15
Some Logistics Information
  • Snacks and lunches are provided during the
    meeting
  • Money is requested to help fund the food
    beverages
  • Tours were not planned due to facility
constraints and difficulties in providing access
