  • In 2007, 26 clinics were conducted and 1450
    coaches were trained at the clinics!
  • Couldnt have happened without YOU!
  • Level 2 online courses launched
  • Level 1 certification was launched
  • 2nd Train the Trainer West took place

Whats in store for 08?
  • 15 Level 1 clinics between now and March,
  • Hoping for 15 more Sept.-Dec.
  • Over 50 coaches are currently in some stage of
    the certification process-goal of 500 certified
    in 2008
  • New streaming video clips in the Level 1 online
    courses
  • Release of 5 additional CEP DVDs as training
    resources through USL online store
  • Level 2 clinic piloting and roll-out
  • Training first group of Level 2 trainers

Level 2 clinics
  • Mens clinic was piloted in Atlanta, GA and
    Bethesda, MD this past fall.
  • Looking to do 1-2 more before season begins, run
    about 4 more this fall
  • Women are in initial development phase, will
    begin piloting this fall.

Certification Update
  • Certification went live right before Thanksgiving
    2007
  • About 30 applications in process right now from
    all over the country.
  • The clinics are a component of achieving
    certification!
  • Remember, as a representative of this program,
    you need to be well-versed in the requirements!
  • Level 2 certification slated for 2009

Review What is certification?
Certification is the act of verifying that an
individual has achieved a level of education or
educational experience as defined by the
requirements for the certification at the time of
course completion. Certification does not
guarantee that an individual will act in a
certain way or demonstrate particular
characteristics in the future.

How do I become certified?

  • STEP 1 Start now--Get the knowledge Complete
    your educational components (ECs) CEP Level 1
    on-line course is completed  CEP Level 1
    Instructional Clinic is completed  PCA Double
    Goal Coach 1 course - Coaching for Winning and
    Life Lessons - is completed on-line or at a
    live workshop (www.positivecoach.org). US
    Lacrosse members receive a 20 discount to the
    online version of this workshop. Enter code
    USLax2008 when you register.STEP 2Do the
    paperwork Submit your documentation Download
    the Certification Educational Component Portfolio
    (pdf format) Fill it out completely,
    carefully following all instructions on the
    form Attach certificates from your educational
    components where instructed (if missing
    certificates, please read FAQs) Send the
    portfolio to US Lacrosse We will contact you
    via e-mail when your portfolio has been reviewed
    and verified. Please allow 2-4 weeks for the
    portfolio review.

How do I become certified (cont.)
  • STEP 3Take the plunge Apply to certify Go to
    the web link provided to you in the e-mail.
    Fill out the online application which also
    collects information to run our state-of-the-art
    background check through National Center for
    Safety Initiatives (NCSI). Please read the FAQs
    for further details. Pay the certification fee
    of 35 for residents of the state of New York,
    the cost is 52. This fee covers the background
    check. The fee in New York is higher due to
    additional local court fees required to conduct
    the background search. Please allow 4-6 weeks
    for NCSI to process your background check.
  • STEP 4Get it You are certified When your
    background check has been satisfactorily
    completed, you will receive a confirmation e-mail
    and your initial certification card will be sent
    in the mail. Congrats!
  • Choose to renew your certification each year with
    your membership renewal. Your certification will
    expire when your membership expires.After 3 or 4
    years, participate in a continuing education
    opportunity if you chose not to move on to Level
    2 certification.

Level 1 Coaching Certification for trainers
  • You had the opportunity to become one of the
    first coaches to hold a Level 1 certification
  • Your card will be coming shortly
  • Thanks for testing out our system!
  • Trainers will be required to stay certified for
    as long as they choose to be trainers.
  • Stay tuned!

Recertification
  • Coaches will recertify at the same time they
    renew their membership each year.
  • After 3-4 years, coaches will be asked to provide
    proof of a continuing education requirement which
    is yet to be determined by the Coaching Education
    Committee

  • It has come to the attention of the coaching
    education committee, that the MOST important
    concept regarding Lesson 6 Practice Planning for
    Level 1 coaches is emphasizing the importance of
    planning and then providing some practical ways
    and guidelines to do so.
  • (NOTE Level 2 covers goal setting in depth)
  • Your objective as a trainer for this lesson is
    that your students know WHY practice planning
    is essential, and 2) know the fundamental
    building blocks of a solidly planned practice.

  • Suggestions for teaching this lesson
  • Use the first question on the slide as a
    discussion starter, or ask the audiencewhat does
    your practice plan look like? Or Do you plan your
    practices?
  • Share a good story about a GREAT practice plan,
    or one that bombed, or how you learned (the hard
    or easy way) that practice planning is an
    essential to being a good coach
  • As you work through the points on the slides,
    share your personal strategies and stories
  • Avoid just reading the slides! Try to connect
    with your audience.
  • Refer to the practice planning templates in the
    online course resources libraries and in their
    workbooks
  • Put closure on the lesson by circling back to
    your initial objectivesask why is practice
    planning essential and what are the components of
    a good plan. This will informally assess whether
    your students get it and to review the main
    concepts covered in the lesson.

best tool a coach can have going for them!
The practice plan becomes the map that gets you
from one point to another A practice plan can hel
p you to introduce skills tactics and strategies
with systematic approach

FIVE things to consider when laying out your
practice
Warm-uphow are you going to use this time?
Inform everyone about the plan! When can they
expect a break, what are the goals, what
activities will they be doing?
Activities and drillsChoose intentionally--how
do they relate to your goals for the day, week
and season? Variety and balancestandard drills
, new drills, high intensity, lower intensity,
individual, team, breaks etc. 5. Summarize-Wh
at did we learn today? What did we do well? What
can we improve on next practice

Consider this A coach is a teacher and teachers
are always connecting their last lesson to the
next lesson being taught. Prepared coaches can
do this also by reviewing their last few practice
plans before they plan the next new one.

    created practice plans, or why doesnt US
    Lacrosse write a seasons worth of plans, or
    something along those linesResponse The
    philosophy of the CEP is to give you all the
    tools to create your own plans because we believe
    that every team, season, and player has unique
    needs. A coach needs to put thought and time into
    a plan that will help his team maximize its
    potential. We want to give you the tools to do
    this!

Womens Mod II revisions
  • After this session the curriculum updates and
    workbook supplement will be explained by Scott
    Biron
  • The CEC felt these were necessary, immediate
    changes in order to keep the curriculum relevant
    given the rapid evolution of the womens game
    since the inception of the program 4 years ago.

  • Kristen Murray (9 clinics) taught 40 womens
    clinic attendees in Cincinnatiby herself!
  • Nathaniel Badder traveled to Utah, Alabama and
    Ohio this fall!
  • Lisa Christiansen and Melissa DAngelo are being
    inducted to the Long Island Hall of Fame in
    February.
