Title: Rehabilitated Rangeland at the Institute

1
Rehabilitated Rangeland at the Institute
  • Even goats and sheep are at the institute

2
Land recovering from one summer grazing only even
with goats present. Goats are blamed for land
degradation. This work blames overresting of
semi-arid ranchland.
3
Contrast in arable (left) and grazing area
(right). Arable area receives full summer
recovery periods after heavy utilization in dry
season.
4
Dead level contours dug by tractor for water
harvesting Key to water-harvesting for wetland
management
5
Wetland-Management Water harvesting dead level
contours
6
Silted Steams coming alive after successful
planned grazing and wetland rehabilitation
7
Farmers now grow tropical fruits in semi-arid
ecosystem from water-harvesting
8
Perennial water sources in watersheds farmers
engaged in fish farming after water harvesting
and planned grazing
9
Next Steps
  • Construction of adequate infrastructure at the
    Institute (Electricity, Irrigation, Wetland,
Orchard, Dairy, Training Centre Buildings, Water
    reticulation, Agro-processing)
  • Sustainable wetland utilization and management is
developed and fully functional at the Njeremoto
    Biodiversity Demonstration and Training Institute
on 12 Northdale Farm Gutu District
    Masvingo.Zimbabwe.
  • Communities and Producers are trained initially
at the Institute and later at satellite
    communities through farmer-to-farmer exchange
visits in Zimbabwe and other Southern African
Countries. Have to set up a Community Investment
    Fund.
  • Internships are promoted with collaborating pilot
    communities and regions.

10
Next Steps (cont.)
  • The demonstration and training, done at the
center influences human aspects such as quality
of life and the environment in Zimbabwe and other
Southern African countries as well as globally.
  • MSc and PhD students are attached to the
Institute to monitor and document the changes and
impact on the ecological, socio-cultural and
economic systems as well as receive and work with
    volunteers.
  • Replicate and set up satellite centers in
    Southern Africa and globally.
  • The international community views Overgrazing and
over-rest as the key factors causing degradation
in semi arid rangelands. Hence have a global
paradigm shift on semi-arid rangelands management.

11
SET UP NEEDED FOR FUNDERS TO THE INSTITUTE
  • Propose ASHOKA to be a Pay through Bank for the
Institute for Donors who may be willing to Donate
to the institute. ASHOKA would then disburse the
funds to Zimbabwe as per our request for safety
    of funds and transparency
  • ASHOKA assists the Institute to register as a not
for profit in the USA in the next 24 months (2008
    to 2009).
  • Establish USA based fund raisers for the
Institute who work closely with ASHOKA

12
My Vision
  • I have in my head the vision of how arid or
semi-arid rangelands will be different when my
idea is at work, and I will not stop until that
idea is not only at work at Njeremoto
Biodiversity Institute but is at work across the
whole society. I am not happy in solving a
problem in one village or two communities only.
