Why Focus On Messaging?
  • E-mail volumes continue to grow
  • Mailboxes Worldwide to Grow dramatically 500M
in 2000 growing to 1.2B in 2005 (Source IDC)
  • 3G Mobile services projections remain strong
  • gt1B mobile internet users by 2005 (Source IDC
    R.Stephens)
  • Wireless messaging volume continues to grow
    faster
  • than other applications
  • 50 Billion SMS Messages in 2001 (Source IIR)
  • DoCoMo i-mode messaging traffic overtaking
  • all other forms of mobile internet services as
    of Sept.
  • 2001 there were 27M i-mode subscribers
  • Internet messaging is the killer application for
  • wireless and future mobile commerce

Messaging Has Become Utility Service
  • Messaging is core wireline/wireless service
  • Email is not SPs core competency its a
    must-have to compete!
  • Revenue in value-added services not baseline
    email
  • Messaging market is mature
  • Clearly defined standards
  • Broad adoption regular usage
  • Key business drivers
  • Ease-of-management
  • Lower total cost of ownership
  • Appliance approach has been proven
  • Purpose-built solutions from Cisco (routing),
    Network Appliance (file servers), CacheFlow
    (cache), F5 (load-balancing), others

The 5 Key Elements of Messaging Infrastructure
  • Message store service Holds and saves users
    messages
  • Inbound message routing service Routes messages
to the appropriate message store for final
    delivery
  • Outbound message routing service Routes
messages from users to the Internet for delivery
to the final (message store) destination
  • Message switching (client access proxy)
service Determines which message store a users
messages reside on, and connects the users
client software to that message store
  • Directory service Manages the identification
and location that directs the routing of messages
and authentication of and access for users

Single System Architecture

In a Single System architecture the message
servers also act as the Inbound and Outbound
routers and message switch. These Systems are
designed with commercial software packages such
as Sun internet mail server which run on OS like
UNIX on high end hardware server platforms.

Drawbacks of Conventional E-mail Architectures
  • The application software itself is quite
complex, because it handles all three aspects of
    e-mail functionality routing, storage, and
switching. The more complex the software, the
    greater the opportunity for error.
  • The hardware itself is very expensive and there
is a single point of failure. Failure in any one
component of the architecture can bring the
    entire system to a standstill.
  • The system is not scalable and to be prepared
for a future growth, the service provider has to
buy expensive gear upfront and wait for the users
    to fill the capacity.
  • This architecture cannot be deployed quickly and
is difficult to manage, particularly remotely
over the internet. It is also expensive to
manage, requiring the number of experts (UNIX or
    NT experts) and hardware experts.
  • The operating system supporting the application
software is also not optimized for e-mail, which
hinders the capabilities of the system itself.

Advantages of Distributed System Architecture
  • Provides much greater reliability by eliminating
single point of failure. No single component
failure can bring down the entire system because
the functions are spread amongst multiple
    systems.
  • It provides more flexibility as it allows
companies to spend on infrastructure on a need
    basis.
  • It provides a significantly lower cost of
ownership as the scaling of the infrastructure
doesnt require replacing one system with an
    entirely new system.
  • It allows remote deployment which can be
centrally managed, so no IT expertise is needed
    at the remote site.
  • It enables split deployment. Companies can keep
their legacy mail stores and can adopt to
scalable solutions in early phases and can switch
over completely in the later stages.

Mirapoints Software Architecture
  • Mirapoints operating system ( MOS ) is small
and efficient. It was designed for one purpose to
deliver an optimal operating environment for
Internet message routing, storage and access.
  • Very compact to uses only the code required to
perform the task thus reduces any opportunity
for system error, which in turn enhances system
    performance with less hardware.
  • It is a very secure system as the intruders have
no way to access it because there are no exposed
commands or executables that could render it
vulnerable to attack. The operating system
installs in 15 minutes and runs without
maintenance and has a proven up time of 99.99.
  • The administrative user interface has only 33
major commands and an intuitive GUI, user error
is virtually eliminated. Mirapoint charges no
user fees thus enabling the companies and ISPs
to freely add users without any incremental
    costs.
