1
USPG in Peru A look at the work of USPG Mission
Companions Bishop Bill and Judith Godfrey
2
One of the many shanty towns where thousands of
families live on the outskirts of Perus capital
city Lima.
3
Thousands of families live in these shanty towns.
Many came from rural villages in search of work
and a better life.
4
Some women find work as maids and men work as
day labourers. But living conditions are poor.
5
The Anglican Church is running programmes to
support people in the shanty towns, such as a
duck-rearing project.
6
USPG Mission Companion Bishop Bill Godfrey is
urging the Diocese of Peru to reach out to the
poor and marginalised.
7
Church projects include schools, nurseries,
garden projects, micro-finance schemes, soup
kitchens, and much more.
8
A priest in the shanty towns said These people
are rejected by society, but were helping them.
We are working for God.
9
This church community centre offers healthcare, a
nursery so mothers can go to work, and somewhere
to wash clothes.
10
In a village called Cerro Cachito, the church has
set up a Child Protection Project which is
teaching parenting skills.
11
Clergy and lay-ministers are being trained and
sent out across Peru, even to the most remote
regions.
12
This mural was painted by local artists to
brighten up a drab playground at an Anglican-run
primary school.
13
This wall hanging was embroidered by women from
the Anglican Church. Pieces are sold to support
church work.
14
Pam Caldwell, former USPG Mission Companion, set
up a scheme to introduce colour and nutrition
into shanty towns.
15
She taught how to make cushion covers and table
mats to brighten the home. She also introduced
the magic oven.
16
Magic ovens cook food without fuel. Stews are
boiled for ten minutes. The pan is then left to
cook in a padded box.
17
A child naps during lunch time at an Anglican
nursery school. Parents go to work knowing their
children are looked after.
18
Peru is a beautiful country, from the Amazon and
the Andes to the desert plains. It is also prone
to extreme weather.
19
The Anglican Church responded when an earthquake
hit rural southern Peru. Later, new churches were
set up.
20
USPG sent blankets, clothes and emergency aid
after a wave of intensely cold weather claimed
lives.
21
A visitor to Lima said The Anglican Church has
many thriving projects among the poor and is a
growing force.
22
Bishop Bill said Every day, the Anglican Church
is rubbing shoulders with a million people,
changing lives.
23
USPG is supporting Bishop Bill and Judith as they
reach out with Gods love.
