Provide in-house expertise in organic synthesis.
Provide researchers with the opportunity to enter
into collaborative projects that require unique
small molecules.
To allow UTMB researchers to participate in
initiatives requiring small molecules.

Parallel Synthesis Facility

Objective
Provide compound libraries to biological
researchers for screening in novel assays
Through Collaborative projects with researchers
at UTMB. Focused libraries Access to
libraries synthesized in the facility and
archived. Sample libraries Visiting
scholars/postdoc program.

Resources
Ph.D. Manager and staff person To manage the
facility and assist visitors in the development
of appropriate libraries.
Equipment for parallel/combinatorial synthesis.
Advanced ChemTech Vantage Combinatorial
Synthesizer. Capable of both solution and solid
phase chemistry.
Mimotopes SynPhase system. Synthesis on pins in
a 96 well format
Microwave reactor
Parallel purification equipment.

The Collaborative Process
A serious commitment on the part of researchers
will be necessary.
Libraries will have to be developed through
discussion between the Manager and the interested
party.
There are very few libraries in the literature.
In most instances chemistry will have to be
developed for the synthesis of the desired
library. This makes these interactions a research
project!
The synthesis of unique libraries will have to be
included in the budget of grants.
In time we will have collections of libraries
available for screening.

The Mechanism of Operation
Full collaboration with Faculty in the Chemical
Biology Program. Joint grants
PI provides the staffing for the actual work.
Postdoc or visiting scholar. This will require
consultation with the Facility Manager to design
the chemistry and train the person.
Work done completely by the Facility Staff.
Access to archived libraries for screening.
