  • Agenda
  • Power Point/Discussion of metric measurement
  • Worksheet
  • Discussion of Lab Safety
  • HW On a sheet of paper, write down common items
in your house that are measured using the metric
    system.

2
Answers
  • Meters (m)
  • Milliliters (mL)
  • Grams (g)
  • Degrees Celsius (?)
  • Grams/millilter (g/mL)
  • Grams/centimeter cubed (g/cm³)
  • Length
  • Volume
  • Mass
  • Temperature
  • Density

3
Length
  • What unit of length Kilometers, Meters,
    Centimeters, Millimeters, micrometers would you
use to measure the length of
  • Kilometers
  • Micrometers
  • Meters
  • Centimeters
  • millimeters
  • State of NY
  • A bacteria cell
  • This room
  • Your hand
  • A diamond

4
Volume
  • Liquid Volume is measured by a graduated cylinder
in milliliters (mL). You read the volume by
measuring the meniscus, the bottom of the loop.
  • The volume of solid, regular shape objects is
    found by using a ruler (L x W x H ) and is
    measured in centimeters cubed (cm³)

Mass
  • Mass is NOT Weight!
  • Mass on moon is the same as on Earth
  • Weight on moon is much smaller than on earth.
  • Why... Because mass is the amount of matter
inside of something, weight is a measure of the
attraction between two objects due to gravity.

7
Question
  • A ship has a mass of 500 kg, a huge boulder has
the same mass of 500kg. What happens when you
put both the ship and the boulder in the ocean?
  • The ship FLOATS and the boulder SINKS!
  • Why???

8
Density
  • Density is the amount of mass in a given volume
  • The mass of the ship and the boulder are the same
  • BUT the Volume of the ship is much LARGER than
    the volume of the boulder

9
Temperature
  • The metric system uses Degrees Celsius
  • Water boils at 100C
  • Ice melts at 0C
  • The body temperature of humans is 37C
