  • PRIYA .M

2
THE RIME OF THE ANCIENT MARINER S.T.COLERIDGE
3
The Rime of the Ancient Mariner
  • This poem by S.T Coleridge brings out the
torment of ancient mariner. He had committed the
ghastly mistake of killing an albatross. As a
result he landed up in such a situation that all
the mariners blamed him for whatever happened and
hung the dead bird as a reminder of his act.
  • The mariner was continuously tormented. The only
way of lessening this torment was by sharing this
    with some one/

Figures of Speech
  • A figure of speech is a departure from the
ordinary form of expression,or the ordinary
course of ideas in order to produce a greater
    effect

6
The Ancient Mariner as a Ballad
  • Of all modern poems The Rime comes nearest to
achieving an impossible-the impossibility of the
modern writer of writing a genuine ballad.
  • Simplicity and terseness of expressions, directness
    of narration,abrupt beginning ,use of
    conventional epithets and archaisms, repetition
of phrases and lines, sudden introduction of new
elements and transition to new incidents, impersona
lity-these are some of the main features of the
traditional ballads that Coleridge uses in The
Ancient Mariner. With such wonderful effect that
the poem has been praised as one of the finest of
the so called imitations and has received great
critical acclaim as a fine example of
Coleridges rare genius for writing ballads.

7
simile
  • In a simile comparison is made between two
objects of different kinds which have however at
least one point in common .
  • The simile is usually introduced by such words
    as like ,as or so
  • Examples like a 3 years child(lines 15/16)
  • Red as a rose is she(line 34)
  • As idle as a painted ship(line115/116)

8
  • As green as emerald(53)
  • ..like gods own head(line 96)
  • The water, like a witchs oil(line 127)
  • Like noises in a swond (line 60)

9
Imagery Used in the Poem
Next
  • The following images found in the poem are
    grouped weather wise
  • 1. Stormy
  • And now the storm blast came and he was
tyrannous and strong .He struck with his wings
and chased us south along(stanza 2)
  • 2. Extreme winter
  • And now there came both mist and snow ,
  • And it grew wondrous cold (Stanza 13)

10
Personification
  • In personification inanimate objects and
abstracts notions are spoken of as having life
    and intelligence.
  • Example
  • And now storm blast came, and he was tyrannous
    and strong.
  • The sun now rose upon the right
  • Out of the sea came he

11
Alliteration
  • The use of repetition of a succession of words
with the same initial letters or sound as in the
    river running round the race
  • For example
  • The fair breeze blew, the white foam flew the
    furrow followed free.(Lines 102/103)
  • Note The first syllable of succeeding words
    have the same sound.

12
Repetition
  • Poets use repetitions in order to emphasize the
most significant part of each stanza. Also, when
the poem is read aloud ,repetition gives the
listener a greater opportunity to understand
    those words .
  • Example The ice was here ,the ice was there
,the ice was all round(lines 57/58)
  • Day after day ,day after day..(line114)
  • Water ,water ,everywhere.(lines 118/120)

13
Metaphor
  • A metaphor is an implied simile. It does not like
the simile, state that one thing is like another
or act as another, but takes that for granted and
proceeds as if the two things were one. Thus
,when we say ,He fought like a lion we use a
simile, but when we say ,He was a lion in the
    fight,we use a metaphor.
  • Example
  • The bloody sun( line 113)
  • . Upon the painted ocean.( line 111)

14
Oxymoron
  • A figure of speech with a conjunction of seeming
    contradictories.
  • E.g Faith unfaithful kept him falsely true.
  • Line 56 -dismal sheen.

15

    one example for each.
