The Tutor Cockpit
  • A Guide to Aircraft Instrumentation

2
How to use this program
  • Use the mouse to navigate by clicking on the
active buttons on the task bar at the bottom of
    the page.
  • Move through the program to the active cockpit
where you will be able to click on the aircraft
instruments to find out more about them.
  • When you are confident that you can answer
questions on any of the instruments you can go to
the quiz page and test your knowledge.
  • When you have finished with the program you can
click Exit at any time to end the program.

3
What is a cockpit?
  • The cockpit of an aircraft is where the pilot
    fly's the aircraft from.
  • The pilot must have all the information he/she
needs to fly the aircraft displayed to them in a
way that is easily understood, and they must be
able to control the aircraft in the simplest way
    possible.

Air Speed Indicator
Show the speed of the Aircraft in Knots.
AIRSPEED
One Knot is equal to 1.15 miles per hour
KNOTS
Green band is the safe zone
Redline is dangerous over speed.
12
Attitude Indicator
Indicates to the pilot the position of the
Horizon relative to the aircraft.
Also called the Artificial Horizon
Contains a gyroscope which rotates at high speed
giving a constant level reference point.
Locked for protection when completing aerobatics
with knob.

Turn Coordinator
The turn coordinator is an aircraft instrument
which displays to a pilot information about the
rate of turn, rate of roll, and the 'quality' or
'coordination' of the turn.
Only when the correct amount of rudder is applied
during a turn will the aircraft increase or
decrees altitude.
20
Altimeter
Shows the aircrafts height in Feet
Large pointer 100s of feet
Medium pointer 1000s of feet
Small pointer 10,000s of feet
The air pressure of the day is dialled in to with
this nut.

Vertical Speed Indicator
This instrument shows whether the aircraft Is

28
Horizontal Situation Indicator
As you can see the HSi is a compass
But it also show displays the direction to
Navigation beacons (VHF omnidirectional radio
range beacons)
29
Navigation beacons
There are a number of different types of
navigation beacon.
Aerodrome location beacons
..and waypoint beacons
Aerodrome location beacons Are used to find
landing sites and way point beacons are like
landmarks you navigate from one point to the next.
By measuring the time it taken to receive the
signal from the beacon the his can tell you how
far away you are from it and what direction it is
from you.
