Different types of information sources
  • Best source of all - talking to an expert
  • Books are assessed by anonymous referees, and
published by reputable companies. Some books are
better than others, and most contain some
    mistakes!
  • Web sources are usually not evaluated - you must
evaluate the quality of the information
  • Periodicals are also called journals or
    magazines. Published periodical articles/papers
are refereed by anonymous experts in the same
    subject.
  • Corrections and improvements are made before
    publication called peer review
  • You do not need to look for research level
    periodical articles now

Mechanical Engineers, IMechE - the UK based
    professional institution)

    Mechanical Engineers, ASME)
  • Flight international (weekly)
  • Aerospace America (American Institute of
    Aeronautics and Astronautics, AIAA)

Formulating your enquiry
  • Think about keywords to describe your subject -
think of different keywords used to describe the
    same subject
  • engineering maths, engineering mathematics
  • television, TV

Looking for books in Library catalogues
  • Books good sources of evaluated, refereed,
    edited information
  • Library catalogues only index the subject of the
    whole book
  • Archimedes principle, but you will not find a
whole book on that subject (we do have a DVD!)
  • Short Loan link - books in the Short Loan
Collection, kept behind the Library Issue Counter
    on the Ground Floor

22
Looking for books in Library catalogues (2)
  • Library catalogues do not often have good
    controlled vocabulary
  • In QM Library catalogue, the symbol for right
hand truncation is , e.g. engine
  • Searches for engine or engines or engineering
  • Wild card symbol is ?, e.g. organi?ation
  • Search for an exact phrase by putting in single
    quotes e.g. computer aided design
  • if you search for two keywords - you find books
    with both keywords

23
Combining concepts with the Boolean logic AND
when you use more than one keyword
  • books about engineering books about
    maths, mathematics, etc

Systematic searching
  • When you find a useful book or some information
inside a book, take time to make a full note in
your notebook or recording system. ITS ESSENTIAL
to be well organised and systematic!
  • It is essential to avoid plagiarising other
    peoples ideas and data
  • Plagiarism is the use or presentation of the work
of another person, including another student, as
your own work (or part of your own work) without
    acknowledging the source
  • Queen Mary Student Guide explains plagiarism and
    the penalties applicable
  • For your project and possibly for Medical
Engineering students before then, use EndNote Web
to manage your references to books and periodical
    papers

31
Searching the Web in general for information
  • Finding information on the Web link for some
    evaluation criteria
  • Web search engines dont all search the Web in
the same way, and it can be difficult to tell
what each one does. Read the Help or the Advanced
    Searching hints or tips
  • Different types of Web searching tools
  • Automated search engines
  • Classified directories, e.g. Yahoo! use real
    people
  • Subject specific gateways, e.g. Intute, Aerade
are created by interested and knowledgeable
    volunteers
