Jesus Decided to Choose the Apostles
Luke 1425-33 - If anyone comes to me and does
not hate his father and mother, his wife and
children, his bro- thers and sisters-yes, even
his own life- he cannot be my disciple. And
anyone who does not carry his cross and follow
me cannot be my disciple. Suppose one of you
wants to build a tower. Will he not first sit
down and estimate the cost to see if he has
enough money to complete it? For if he lays the
foun- dation and is not able to finish it,
everyone who sees it will ridicule him, saying,
This fellow began to build and was not able to
finish. Or suppose a king is about to go to war
against another king. Will he not first sit down
and consider whether he is able with ten thousand
men to oppose the one coming against him with
twenty thousand? If he is not able, he will send
a delegation while the other is still a long way
off and will ask for terms of peace. In the same
way, any of you who does not give up everything
he has cannot be my disciple.
Luke 612-16 - One of those days Jesus went out
to a mountainside to pray, and spent the night
praying to God. When morning came, he called his
disciples to him and chose twelve of them, whom
he also designated apostles Simon (whom he named
Peter), his brother Andrew, James, John,
Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James son
of Alphaeus, Simon who was called the Zealot,
Judas son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who
became a traitor.

BEFORE THEIR SELECTION
Luke 612-16 - One of those days Jesus went out
to a mountainside to pray, and spent the night
praying to God. When morning came, he called his
disciples to him and chose twelve of them, whom
he also designated apostles Simon (whom he named
Peter), his brother Andrew, James, John, Philip,
Bartholo-mew, Matthew, Thomas, James son of
Alphaeus, Simon who was called the Zealot, Judas
son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a
traitor.
1. He went off all by Himself, alone.
2. He spent the whole night in prayer.

THE SELECTION ITSELF

Alphaeus, Simon who was called the Zealot, Judas
son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a

1. He called them to Him (cf. Mk. 314)
He appointed twelve-designating them
apostles-that they might be with him and that he
might send them out to preach

THE SELECTION ITSELF
Luke 612-16 - One of those days Jesus went out
to a mountainside to pray, and spent the night
praying to God. When morning came, he called his
disciples to him and chose twelve of them, whom

Alphaeus, Simon who was called the Zealot, Judas
son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a
traitor.
1. He called them to Him (cf. Mk. 314)
2. He named them apostles (ones sent forth,
messengers). He chose men who had the
qualities that blended with His goal and
strategy.
6
THE BASIS OF THEIR SELECTION
As Jesus was walking be-side the Sea of Galilee,
he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his
bro-ther Andrew. They were casting a net into the
lake, for they were fishermen. "Come, follow me,"
Jesus said, "and I will make you fishers of men."
At once they left their nets and followed
himAfter this, Jesus went out and saw a tax
collector by the name of Levi sitting at his tax
booth. "Follow me," Jesus said to him, and Levi
got up, left everything and followed him.
From this time many of his disciples turned back
and no longer followed him. "You do not want to
leave too, do you?" Jesus asked the Twelve.
Simon Peter answered him, "Lord, to whom shall we
go? You have the words of eternal life. We
believe and know that you are the Holy One of
God."
1. They were available (Mt.418ff Lk.527f)
He didnt plead, bargain, use clever gimmicks,
nor promise some great personal reward
2. They were teachable grown men but open
to instruction, guidance, rebuke
3. They were flexible were not afraid to
change, go vs. the grain, give their lives
for what they fully believed
4. They were dependable stayed w/Him when
things turned sour dangerous (cf. Jn.
666-69)
7
AN OBSERVATION
On the surface, they looked like really poor
choices rugged, uneducated, unpolished,
no influence, no credentials
But they had the humility and the qualities of
character that made them able to be molded into
what He wanted them to become.
8
How did He train them so they could turn the
world upside down?
THE INITIAL CALL COME TO ME!
1. He said, Follow me, and they did they
immediately left their nets and followed Him
(Mk.118)They left their father in the boat with
the hired servants went away to follow Him
(v.20)
2. Jesus did not train them with textbooks,
notebooks, a tape series, special You, too,
can turn the world upside down! seminars
In essence, He said Truth is in Me. Stay with
Me, live with Me, and you will find it. Philip
underscored this when he said to Nathaniel, Come
and see (Jn. 146).
9
How did He train them so they could turn the
world upside down?
METHOD OF TRAINING LEARN FROM ME!
1. He trained them by living with them. That
daily, intimate contact so impressed them that it
changed transformed them. They became
infected with Jesus, Truth, and His
righteousness.
2. In spite of often dealing w/multitudes, He
never neglected training these 12.
It often appeared they were learning little, but
He kept them with Him for about 3 years. In that
time, He and His teaching became forever
imprinted in them.
10
COME TO ME . . . LEARN FROM ME!
1. We cannot become disciples from a distance.
We must stay close to Him all the time.
Does that teach us anything about how to train
our children?
Does that teach us anything about how to train
others to become disciples of the Lord?
2. Imitating Jesus calls for a sacrifice of
personal time, schedules, privacy, and
maybe even money. And it may call for a shift
in priorities.
Whom are we helping to disciple? To whom are
we saying Come to melearn from me?
