Town Structure
  • Government- Although most people in the Southern
colonies were independent farmers the wealthy
planters still controlled much of the government.
This is due to the fact that they had most of
    the money.
  • Organization- The Southern colonies did not have
the same type of setup that the northern colonies
had. Most of them did not live in towns. A few
of the wealthy ones lived in plantations. A
plantation was like a self-contained village.
Some plantations had their own schools and
    churches.

3
Farming
The main product farmed in the south was tobacco.
Another popular crop was rice.
4
Labor Source
  • The main source of labor in the Tidewater area of
    the south was slavery.
  • However, the people who loved in the Backcountry
were independent farmers. If they had slaves
they usually had just one or two. Everyone in
    the family would help work.

5
Commerce
  • The Southern Colonies relied so heavily on
farming that they never had a need to develop
    commerce.

6
Who did they trade with?
  • The Southern Colonies traded only with England.
In fact, English merchants were in charge of
managing most of the souths trade.

7
Religion
The people in the Southern colonies generally
remained part of the Anglican Church (Church of
England.)
8
Unique Fact
  • The Southern Colonies are unique because they are
the colonies which are the most closely tied to
    Great Britain.
