Western Canada Heritage Centre
  • It is planned as a complex or cluster of three
  • major buildings in the City of Kamloops,
  • housing six full size Museums, and many
  • Tourist related specialty exhibits.
  • Also planned is a large outdoor site to be
  • designed in a Heritage Park style, and located
  • at Campbell Creek. It will display Heritage
  • Equipment such as Heavy Duty Machinery
  • from Mining, Military, Agriculture, Forestry,
  • and Construction.

Western Canada Heritage Centre
  • This Centre is being developed as a full service
    Tourist Destination site.
  • Circular route Heritage Bus Tours leave from our
    Centre and visit some of British Columbias
    heritage sites, cattle ranches, mines, forestry,
    and other heritage and tourist interest sites.
  • After returning to Kamloops they enjoy a ride on
    the 2141 Steam Engine Train or other special
    events available to them.

    able to relocate into the centre

  • The three new Museums will be
  • Pioneer Chinese Railway Workers Heroes of
    Confederation Museum. Also an exhibit for the
    Chinese who paid the Head Tax in order to stay or
    to enter Canada.
  • Kamloops Heritage Railway Roundhouse Museum,
    joined to our Centre by way of an overhead
    walkway above the Cheng Interchange railway
    track.
  • RCMP Museum and 2 RCMP Private Collections.
  • British Columbia Police exhibit included.

Our New Museums
1.
Heroes of Confederation Museum
  • In memory of the Pioneer Chinese Railway Workers
    of 1880 to 1885
  • We will reclaim and preserve their culture and
    heritage.
  • We will honour them properly for the sacrifices
    they made which then enabled creation of the
    Confederation of Canada, keeping USA railroads
    out of British Columbia.

Kamloops Heritage Railway and Roundhouse Museum
  • This museum will be joined to the Heritage Centre
    by way of an overhead walkway above the Cheng
    Interchange railway track.
  • Visitors will see the
  • Museum and the
  • volunteers working
  • on refurbishing rail
  • cars and steam
  • locomotives.

RCMP and Municipal Police Museum
  • 2 Private RCMP Collections.
  • RCMP Museum in Regina will bridge with our
    museum.
  • British Columbia Police history.
  • B.C. Municipal Police forces histories.

Other Inside Exhibits
  • The Big Little Science Centre will be able to
    relocate to larger spaces and continue to
    fascinate students visiting from all over BC, and
    for tourists it is a must see also.
  • Two major sized Tourist Attractions to be named
    soon.
  • Large screen displays showing a BC Map will
    depict each stage and contract of the CPR
    construction 1880 to 1885, and all Railways built
    since.
  • Model Railway exhibits will be built on the
    walls surrounding the Tourist sites and many
    other locations to depict how hard it was for
    building railways in BC in mid 1880s and the
    years after for the other railways.

  • The Heritage Corridor, eastward along the
    Millennium Trail
  • A series of concrete Heritage Walls, spaced
    separately over a distance, with inscribed name
    plates to honour our pioneers, for example
  • 1. Chinese Railway Workers
  • 1880 to 1885 on the Canadian
  • Pacific Railway construction.
  • 2. Chinese who paid the Head
  • Tax to stay or to enter Canada.
  • 3. The other multi-cultural
    groups who were early pioneer settlers
    in Western Canada.

Heritage Corridor the 10 year plan.
  • Miniature Steam Train, Stagecoach, Hayride Wagon,
    and a Paddlewheel River Boat as varied fun
    methods of historical transport between the BC
    Wildlife Park area and the Heritage Centre.
  • A walk, bicycle path, and mini-road with Walls of
    Honour, History Kiosks, serviced rest areas in
    strategic locations along the way.
  • A Small Tour Bus could also be available, and
    perhaps the Heritage Railway 2141.

The Heritage Centres Goals
  • To be a Heritage, Cultural, Science, and Arts
    focal centre for the City of Kamloops and the
    entire region.
  • To provide spaces for community workshops, and
    educational purposes in the Cultural, Arts,
    Science, and Heritage awareness sectors.

  • To be a Tourist Destination venue that will
    excite the travelling public and encourage them
    to stay longer and enjoy all the other amenities
    that will be offered in Kamloops.
  • To be the launch site for circular Tours to other
    BC sites, which then return tourists back to
    Kamloops for additional overnight stays.

  • To be a benefit to Kamloops City and the Thompson
    Nicola Regional District by creating a much
    higher tourism rate, with a larger percentage
    wanting an extra overnight stay.
  • To work closely with downtown businesses and
    those throughout the City to increase their share
    of tourist shopping revenues.
  • To work closely with all the TNRD locations which
    are interested in providing heritage stopping
    sites for our Circle Tours.

  • Work closely with other BC areas with historic
    sites to ensure complete heritage coverage by the
    Circle Tours.
  • Annually to expand our Heritage Corridor along
    the South Thompson River east to the BC Wildlife
    Park and our Military, Mining, Agricultural Heavy
    Equipment Compound and Outdoor Museum area.

Budget with revenues from
  • Retail spaces leasing, meeting room rentals.
  • Guided tours, Entry Fees.
  • Gift Shop, Coffee Counters, Family Food Fun.
  • Rooftop full-view conference restaurant.
  • Large convention catering.
  • Membership Fees, and Friends of WCHC Fees.
  • Corporate Ads donations.
  • Foundation Funds and In Memoriam gifts.
  • Fees for sales of local and Circle Tours in BC.

Proposed Schedule of Project
  • Funding Program to be initiated - January of
    2009.
  • Feasibility Study completed July 31, 2009.
  • Business plan completed - October 31, 2009.
  • Architectural concept complete December 31, 2009.
  • Architectural/Engineering Plans March 31, 2010.
  • Call for Bids, Phase 1 May, 2010 for July,
    2010.
  • Winning Bid decision September, 2010.
  • Construction start Feb./March, 2011.
  • Construction completed Phase 1 - May/June, 2012.

Ongoing Action
To honour the Pioneer Chinese Railway Workers
1880/1885, on Saturday, May 28, 2006 the CP
Railway re-named the Interchange track which
crosses Lorne Street. It is now officially named
Cheng Interchange.

Heroes of Confederation
  • We were pleased to announce in early November
    2005 that we had received an official
    Proclamation by the Province of BC that the week
    Nov. 1st to 7th inclusive, is now an officially
    proclaimed time to honour those Pioneer Chinese
    Railway Workers of 1880 - 1885.

Ongoing Action
  • Kamloops Heritage Railway Engine 2141
  • Continues to thrill visitors on the Steam Engine
    Train Rides, and so does Bill Miner, our
    historical Train Robber.
  • There will be other new and exciting events or
    destinations as soon as available.
