for International Health (CSIH), the Canadian
International Development Agency (CIDA) is
funding this project to improve the Guyanese
public health system.

HIV/AIDS,/STIs /Tb and primary health care and
processing it into information - Encourage expansion of computerized health

adults and children developed with CDC - Additional technical staff supporting the
National AIDS Program Secretariat (NAPS) - Key Guyanese health professionals trained on a
study tour to Canada - Practicing physicians in Regions 4 and 6 trained
by mentoring and CME - Recommendations for service delivery at GUM
clinic provided and implemented, training
initiated - Two day workshop for physicians and follow up
clinical sessions on HIV management provided in
region 6 - Courses provided for the University of Guyana on
STI/HIV/TB microbiology - HIV/AIDS/STI course for all health science
students developed and approved by UG Board to
start January 2005 and be offered to general
public in the Summer
- Completed draft of National Guidelines for the
institutional management of STIs - Genitourinary Medicine (GUM) clinic lab set up
to allow rapid testing - Protocol developed and approved at IRB for
baseline study of STIs prevalence in Guyana to be
accomplished in collaboration with CAREC.
Training of all health professionals from the six
study sites provided. Sites equipped. - 20 persons trained at Counselling seminar

now member of the IUATLD - First National TB conference held in
collaboration with MOH and the Chest Society - DOTS launched in regions 10 and 6
- Clinical management planning goals and
objectives for the database developed - Networking and electrical circuits for GUM and
Chest clinics and D. Bailey designed and
accomplished - Clinical database designed, installed and being
pilot tested at GUM and TB clinics - NetCorps intern recruited to assist with feed
back and training - Version 0.2 of database designed and installed at
the 3 sites - User training and basic computer course delivered
for 38 health professionals - RHOs from regions 6 and 10 enrolled in a MPH
programme at UWI
- Completed Nursing Guidelines for Care in the
Home and Community (NGCHC), especially in
relation to HIV/AIDS, TB and Palliative Care.
Document reviewed by over 100 Guyanese nursing
focus groups and key leaders - 37 trainers identified and training the trainers
initiated - Train the trainers modules on adult learning and
on infection control pilot tested in three
project regions. - HIV/AID module drafted to be piloted in April in
the 3 regions - Continuing education for nurses provided
