REGIONAL NATURAL RESERVE OF SAN GIULIANO
By the water of the artificial potting of San
Giuliano 14.105 hectares of fields are watered
6.215 hectares in Basilicata and 7.890 in Puglia.
The area of the lake of San Giuliano was born in
1976 as an oasis of protection and shelter for
the permanent and migratory fauna.
The surface of the lake extends for 1.000
hectares and wedges for 10 km. In the valley of
the Bradano river.
The artificial potting (completed in 1955) was
created in a groove nearly 40 m. deep and 300 m.
wide and it was fed by the water of the Bradano
river.

The lake presents many inlets and arms its banks
somewhere are level, somewhere slope down to the
lake.
In San Giuliano oasis the main environment are
three the river, the lake and the ravine.
Beyond the barrage the river flows into a ravine
of striking beauty, a deep gorge of calcareous
rock hollowed out by the water of the river.
The river (Bradano) presents vegetation anf
animals typical for this environment.
The vegetation of the shores of the lake
includes the roverella and the ilex, in the
underwood we find the lentisc, the myrtle, the
marruca and many other plants.
