  storms, more than at any point since record
  keeping began in 1851.
• The previous record of 21 was set in 1933.

HURRICANE BETA PROVIDENCIA

• Tropical storm Beta was upgraded to a hurricane
  on Saturday as it battered the tiny Caribbean
  island of Providencia.
• Beta disrupted communications, ripped roofs off
  low-lying wooden homes and forcing residents to
  take refuge in brick shelters on higher ground.

HURRICANE BETA PROVIDENCIA

• Residents of Providencia hiked into the
  mountains.
• A total of 25 inches (64 centimeters) of rain is
  expected to fall on the island.

HURRICANE BETA CENTRAL AMERICA

• Beta is expected to slam into Central America by
  Sunday, October 30 as a Category 2 storm.
• A storm surge of up to 13 feet (four meters) is
  predicted for the eastern coast of Nicaragua when
  the slow-moving storm makes landfall.

• Strong winds and heavy rain began lashing the
  Puerto Cabezas, about 250 miles (400 kilometers)
  northeast of Managua, on Friday, October 28.

• Nicaragua issued a hurricane warning for its
  entire Caribbean-side coast.
• Thousands of people were being evacuated and
  soldiers were brought in to help.
• 32,000 were expected to ride out the storm.
