of behavioral expectations. For example Do the

Consequences
First Offense-Warning. Second Offense-Time
out/Reflection and one mark against conduct
gradeThird Offense-Time out/Reflection sent home
with teacher note and two marks against conduct
grade Fourth Offense-Time Out, Call parents, and
three marks against conduct grade. Any serious
offense is referred to office immediately and
receives three conduct marks. NO THREATS OF ANY
KIND!Consequences may change based upon the
exhibited behavior.

0-8 S9-15 NI16 or More U
Only one conduct grade will be given and will
reflect students behavior in all classes and
throughout the school.

Conduct Reminders!
  • Threats, of any kind, are NOT tolerated!


-Warnings do not affect conduct grade, but do
affect getting daily hand stamp and I Made It
for the week.
-When contacted about a discipline problem,
please address the problem at home.
-Watch out daily for hand stamp.
-Punish as needed, but also praise as needed.
  • Every day is a new day!

Grading Hints
  • Papers go home daily.
  • Papers with a numerical grade are recorded and
    become a part of the nine weeks average in that
    subject.
  • Papers without a numerical grade are not recorded
    and are not part of the nine weeks average.
  • Watch for Sign and Return papers when numerical
    grades are below 70.
  • Mid-term progress reports and deficiencies go
    home at 4 ½ weeks.

  • Homework folder comes home nightly and is to be
    returned daily.
  • Check inside pockets nightly. Place notes, lunch
    money etc in the folder, not in the bookbag.
    Place money in an envelope with your childs
    name.
  • Folder will keep you informed. It is our daily
    communication.
  • Homework will be assigned Monday-Thursday.
    Homework reinforces skills taught at school.
  • Occasionally, there will be special fun projects
    assigned on Friday for completion over the
    weekend to be returned on Monday.
  • Homework should be done in a quiet place and
    should be able to be completed in 15-20 minutes.
  • Please give guidance as needed, but should be
    student work.
  • Sign homework to indicate it has been checked.

Communication Skills
  • Integrated approach that utilizes Learning Focus
    Strategies and 4 Blocks for a daily block of
    guided reading, silent reading, writing, and
    phonics/spelling. Balanced approach to
    communication.
  • Utilizes authentic literature.
  • Reading series-hardcover anthology collection-big
    books-decodable books-below/on/above grade level
    books.

  • Word list per 3 books/stories. Each student must
    learn to read, not spell, the words on the word
    list. This is a graded assignment!
  • Due date for first word list is August 28th.
  • Students are encouraged to become Early Birds
    by reading all words on the word list before the
    due date. Early Birds receive special
    recognition. Let me know when your child is ready
    to read the list.
  • Practice 5-7 words on the list nightly. We
    practice the words at school as well.
  • Spelling test each Friday. List goes home on
    Monday. Practice nightly on the spelling of each
    word.
  • Accelerated Reading Club-When students become
    independent readers and are able to read a book
    and pass a test on that book, they become a
    member of the club.

Other Subject Areas
  • Math-Utilize a combination of text and calendar
    for math instruction. There is much use of
    manipulatives for hands-on math. Learning
    addition and subtraction facts to 18 is stressed.
    Timed tests will be administered throughout the
    year.
  • Science/Social Studies-More hands-on activities
    than pencil/paper. Participation is an important
    part of these subjects. Students receive
    satisfactory or unsatisfactory in these subjects
    on the report card.

  • Provide Success Chain treats.
  • Come help in the classroom with parties,
    celebrations, projects, or be a resource speaker.
  • Share your treasures with the class.
  • Make donations of needed items.
  • Chaperone field trips.

  • Call or email when you have questions or
    concerns.
  • Schedule and attend conferences.
  • Send a note when child is leaving early or there
    are changes in transportation.
  • Praise/discipline as needed.
  • Keep us informed.

  • Please send all money in an envelope and place in
    pocket of homework folder.
  • Put all notes in pocket of homework folder.
  • When ordering from book club, make check out to
    the book club, not the school. No Cash!
  • Must stop by office for a pass when visiting.
  • Write separate checks when paying for different
    activities.
  • Bus riders may bring a small snack to eat while
    waiting.

  • Please join and participate in PTO! We are
    encouraging 100 membership. Please join PTO
    this year. Mark your calendars that the first PTO
    meeting is Thursday, August 28th. Make plans to
    attend.

Possible Field Trip!
First Grade completes a thorough animal study and
likes to have a culminating activity of a trip to
the Riverbanks Zoo in Columbia. Parents will be
surveyed to determine their willingness to help
with the cost of the trip. If there is not
enough interest, the trip will be cancelled. Cost
approximately 20.00.
