Background
  • WLAN (802.11a) and BWA (802.16b/TG4) share the
    unlicensed 5GHz spectrum
  • Both use OFDM, but could possibly have different
    modem parameters
  • Low U-NII band is indoor only (5.15-5.25GHz)
  • Regulations generally allow both WLAN and BWA to
    operate in other bands
  • Currently no etiquette in US for band sharing
  • In Europe, DFS helps in principle
  • No official IEEE position on coexistence of these

Discussion
  • Does DFS in 802.11h solve this problem for WLAN?
  • Does 802.16b incorporate a plan to do WLAN sense?
  • IEEE needs to have clarity and consensus on band
    sharing so Regulatory can focus on WRC 2003 with
    a single IEEE voice.
