What Is An Avalanche

• An avalanche is a big pile of snow falling down
  an area of the mountain.
• Sometimes a large avalanche can release 300,000
  cubic yards of snow per avalanche.

When an Avalanche Occurs

• Most avalanches occur in January through March,
  but have been recorded for every month of the
  year.
• May and June have also been known to kill people
  revealing the danger of spring avalanches.
• 90 of avalanches occur during a snowstorm.

How Does An Avalanche Happen

• Many factors can cause an avalanche such as
  weather, temperature, slope steepness, slope
  direction (weather it is facing north, south,
  east, or west), wind direction, ground, and
  vegetation.
• When snow freezes on the mountain more and more
  snow comes and freezes on top of that until the
  temperature rises so that the snow melts causing
  an avalanche.

Prevention or Protection

• Look out for cracks running across the snow.
• To get out of the way of an avalanche run to the
  side of the mountain.
• Use swimming motions to get yourself farther to
  the surface. If youre near the surface, put an
  arm of leg out of the snow so rescuers can find
  you
• Push snow away from your face so you have enough
  room to breath.
