The Carnegie Foundation
  • The Foundation is a major national and
    international center for research and policy
    studies about teaching. Its mission is to address
    the hardest problems faced in teaching in public
    schools, colleges and universitiesthat is, how
    to succeed in the classroom, how best to achieve
    lasting student learning, and how to assess the
    impact of teaching on students.

CID Overview
  • The Carnegie Initiative on the Doctorate (CID) is
    a multi-year research and action project to
    support departments' efforts to more purposefully
    structure their doctoral programs.
  • Partner and Allied Departments have been selected
    for the CID in chemistry, education, English,
    history, mathematics, and neurosciences.

UNC SOE and CID
  • The UNC School of Education (SOE) is one of ten
    universities chosen as a Partner Department.
  • In Fall 2003 a CID committee was formed.
  • Faculty and graduate students work together on
    the CID committee and have been meeting twice a
    month since Fall 2003.

CID Accomplishments
  • Ongoing discussion around the question What is
    educational research? based on a variety of
    readings
  • Updated policies for doctorate approved by GSD
    and faculty
  • Beginning data collection with students about the
    education program
  • Review of PhD core courses

Inquiry Groups
  • bring together individuals interested in a
    particular topic
  • engage graduate students in the intellectual life
    of the School of Education
  • provide research opportunities
  • provide writing opportunities
  • may be qualitative, quantitative, analytical, or
    philosophical in nature or some combination
    thereof
