Innovations with School of Education
  • Our goal

community of scholars and later become leaders in
    evidence-based educational research, policy, and
    practice
  • Our method
  • Integration of first year preparation for all
    students
  • Our plan
  • First year required core program, including Big
Ideas course, yearlong courses in Quantitative
Methods and Qualitative Methods, and program area
    seminars

5
Innovations within School of Education
  • Big Ideas of the discipline
  • Covers topics, concepts, and theories with which
all students of educational research should be
    familiar.
  • Creates shared knowledge despite diverse
    backgrounds.
  • Serves as a springboard for more advanced
    coursework in each program area.

6
Innovations within School of Education
  • Quantitative and Qualitative Methods
  • Provides an understanding of theory and practice
    in both research traditions.
  • Better illustrates relationships among methods
and the link between research question and method.

7
Innovations within School of Education
  • Program Area Seminars
  • Lets entering students pursue their area of
    specialization during the first year.
  • Provides all students a regular and comfortable
forum for discussion and presentation of
important topics in their area of specialization.

8
Collaborations with other CID-Education schools
  • Joint program reviews with partner institutions.
  • Research and evaluation of process. CU taking
the lead in developing instruments for assessment
    of education doctoral program innovations.
  • Graduate students from all CID-Education schools
    producing autobiographical narratives on
    commonalities and differences within doctoral
education. Focusing on areas of research
    preparation, mentorship, diverse career
aspirations, and the future of the field.
