2
Abstract
  • The goal of our group was to design a sustainable
village in a rural community. While designing
this community, we took into account possible
    geographies and cultural aspects. Upon
completion, our model will be able to be used to
create similar communities around the globe.

3
El Rio Grande do Norte
  • El Rio Grande do Norte is a state in northeastern
    Brazil
  • Economic conditions are good along the coast and
in the cities. However, in the rural areas of the
state the majority of the people live in small,
    poverty stricken, towns and villages.
  • In these villages most families live in small
    shacks.
  • The only water available comes from crude wells,
    often outside of the village.

4
El Rio Grande do Norte
  • The people living in this region rely heavily on
    agriculture.
  • El Rio Grande do Norte is a semi-arid region.
  • Even with fertile land, the lack of consistent
rain water and adequate irrigation systems leads
    to poor crop output.

5
Problem Statement
  • While most of Brazil can be considered a modern
country, many people in the northeast region
still live in poverty. The rural areas of these
states lack adequate housing, clean human waste
    management, and reliable agriculture.

6
Mission Statement
  • Our goal is to improve the living conditions of
people residing in the rural areas of Rio Grande
do Norte by designing a small community with
reasonable housing, a community bathhouse with
plumbing, a community center, and an irrigated
    agricultural system.

7
Design Specifications
  • House Design
  • Bathhouse Design
  • Irrigation System
  • Community Center
  • Well and water Storage/ Filtration

8
House
  • Sturdy and cost efficient housing will be made
with a combination of wood and bamboo.

9
Bathhouse
  • The community bathhouse will provide clean water
and sanitary waste management for the community.

10
Irrigation System
This drip irrigation system is not only efficient
but also, simple, low maintenance, and relatively
inexpensive.
11
Community Center
  • The design that was selected has three main
rooms.  One room is designated for the preparing
of food. The other two are for eating the food,
    and for entertainment.

12
Well and Water Storage/Filtration
  • Intend to dig a well, which is a reliable source
    of water
  • Purchase 12,000 gallon water tank
  • Use industrial water filter to purify
groundwater, pipe to Community Center, Bath
    houses, irrigation system

13
Estimated Costs
  • wWell- 12 a foot, estimated between 10,000 and
    20,000
  • wwater Storage Tank- 10,492
  • Iindustrial Grade Water Filter - 1,000
  • Iirrigation System- 2000 an acre, estimated at
    6000
  • Ccorn Seed 640
  • Wwheat Seed 500
  • Aallotment for assorted livestock, fruits and
    vegetables 3,000
  • Pplumbing Estimate 4,000
  • Hhome 18, 40,000 each, approximately 720,000
  • Bbath-houses Also Bamboo, 2, 50,000 each
    approximately 100,000
  • Ccommunity Center 100,000 estimate
  • Bbarn 45,000, regular wood
  • TTOTAL COST ESTIMATE 1,000,000

14
Conclusion
  • We designed systems for the people of Rio Grande
Do Norte that provide housing, sanitary waste
    management, and irrigated agriculture.
  • Thank you for your time.
