Jeffery Whippo Explains Disinformation and Its
Origin
  • According to Jeffery Whippo, Disinformation is
the deliberate spread of misleading information
    designed to deceive.
  • The word is derived from translation of the
Russian word dezinformatsiya, which is taken from
the title of a KGB black propaganda department.
  • The usage of the word in relation to a Russian
tactical weapon started in 1923, when the Deputy
Chairman of the KGB-precursor the State Political
Directorate (GPU), Józef Unszlicht, called for
the foundation of "a special disinformation
    office to conduct active intelligence
    operations".
  • The GPU was the first organization in the Soviet
Union to utilize the term disinformation for
    their intelligence tactics.
  • In 1952, the Great Soviet Encyclopedia defined
disinformation as false information with the
    intention to deceive public opinion".

    environments
  • Create a bigger than life lie
  • Wrap that lie around a kernel of truth
  • Conceal your hand

Disinformation

    disinformation, which is well-known throughout
the world, specifically during World War II and
    the Cold War.
  • For example, Operation INFEKTION was a
disinformation campaign led by the Soviet KGB to
influence world opinion that the United States of
America had invented the virus AIDS.

The Word Disinformation Gained Prevalence
between 1980s-90s
  • It wasnt until the 1980s that the word
disinformation started to appear in English
    dictionaries.
  • The words utilization increased on the English
    tongue in 1986.
  • This is when it was revealed that the Ronald
Reagan Administration in the U.S. had used
disinformation in a campaign against then Libyan
dictator Muammar Gaddafi (Biagi, 2014), and still
wasnt prevalent in the English vocabulary until
    the 1990s.
