Description:

Jeffery David Whippo, a well-educated leader of teams and people, feels that team effectiveness can be best understood in terms of inputs, processes, and outcomes. He says that by identifying certain process problems in teams, leaders can use the TLM (Team Leadership Model) model to diagnose appropriate leverage points for action. The TLM, he explains, is a mechanism to help identify what a team needs, to be effective and points the leader either toward roadblocks or toward ways to make the team even more effective than it already is. 1
Jeffery David Whippo Discusses In Detail the TLM
(Team Leadership Model) Model
2
Jeffery Whippo Explains What TLM Is
  • Jeffery David Whippo, a well-educated leader of
teams and people, feels that team effectiveness
can be best understood in terms of inputs,
    processes, and outcomes.
  • He says that by identifying certain process
problems in teams, leaders can use the TLM (Team
Leadership Model) model to diagnose appropriate
    leverage points for action.
  • The TLM, he explains, is a mechanism to help
identify what a team needs, to be effective and
points the leader either toward roadblocks or
toward ways to make the team even more effective
    than it already is.
  • Within the TLM model, there are three critical
functions for team leadership which are Dream,
    Design and Develop.

3
Jeffery Discusses the Dream Function
  • Jeffery David Whippo says that in TLM, the major
leadership functions of Dream, Design and
Development are applied through inputs and
    context.
  • Achieving team effectiveness, he implies,
requires paying attention to all three of these
    critical team leadership functions.
  • In order to establish an effective team, a leader
must first set the directions for the team, this
is the Dream function. According to Jeff highly
effective teams need a vision and leaders can use
everything from imagery to metaphors to allow the
    followers to visualize the mission.

Jeffery Discusses the Design Function
  • Furthermore Whippo explains, the leader must take
    into consideration all organizational inputs
    (reward systems, education systems, information
systems), team inputs and individual inputs
(interests and motivations, skills and abilities,
    values and attitudes).
  • Jeff says that these inputs compromise the Design
function and allow the creation of the team
    tasks, composition, and set norms.
  • He says that senior leaders in organizations may
have a vested interest in avoiding or resisting
changing the organization and maintaining the
status quo because they are afraid to rock the
boat as hes seen in previous companies.
  • This is one of the main obstacles that have to be
overcome by individual team leaders in driving
positive and adaptive change within the
    organization.

5
What Happens Within The Development Leadership
Function?
  • Accordingly, Jeff Whippo explains that once the
direction is set and the organizational and
individual inputs drive the team Design, process
criteria are developed such as effort, knowledge
and skills, and strategy which result in the
    Development leadership function.
  • It is within this function, Jeff confers, where
    processes and procedures are continually
developed and monitored in order to drive
continuous growth and improvement of the team.
  • Furthermore, he strongly feels that the
development of the team must be continuous in
order to ensure that the team is well trained,
developed and set up for continuous improvement.
