Title: Scoring An “A” In The OET Speaking Sub-Test - Avigna Learning Academy

1
OET speaking one of the toughest scoring tests
that a candidate can sit for! It is tricky to
have the examiners become impressed by what you
speak and it isnt as easy as it may seem. The
examiners sitting there to judge you are all
professionals, and will look at every mistake
you make. Every mistake counts, and you are
judged for each one of it. So, you need to be
very sure of what you are saying, and how you are
saying it. Not only does your content matter,
but so does your tone, fluency, expressions, and
confidence. To help you speak better in your OET
speaking sub-test, make sure you follow these
simple yet important strategies.
BEGINNING THE CONVERSATION When you are in a
hospital setting, being the doctor or nurse, you
are in control. You dont have to wait for the
patient to speak or ask you something. You
yourself begin the conversation by letting the
patient and his family know the situation, both
present and future. So then, why wait for the
OET person (who role plays the patient) to speak
first? Take control and begin the conversation
from your end. KEEPING THE CONVERSATION ON Now
that you have started the conversation, it
depends upon you how you keep it going. If the
conversation stops, and there is silence around,
you need to bring it alive again up till it
2
is necessary. That spark should be within you,
and not the OET person. So, keep the
conversation going. And, if the patient isnt
speaking, you need to force him to speak. For
this, you can ask questions to compel the patient
to respond, and thus converse. Also, make sure
to ask questions that will have the patient to
speak more, and not reply with just a simple
Yes or No. The patient should open up to you
and feel comfortable with you around. LISTENING
TO THE PATIENT Okay, now you have got the patient
speaking, so it is turn for you to listen
carefully to what he has to say. While, the OET
speaking sub-test examines how you speak,
listening is important too. Unless you listen to
what the patient is saying carefully, you wont
be able to understand what he expects from you,
and thus wont be able to provide a relevant and
appropriate response. After all, communication is
a two way process with both speaking and
listening involved for both the parties engaged
in the conversation. TONE OF VOICE AND
LANGUAGE As mentioned above, the OET speaking
test will not only analyze your content, but also
your quality. This means how you speak, your
tone, your language, everything will be
analyzed. And to hit it off, you need to know and
understand who you are speaking to. What is the
patients age? What is the patients condition?
How positive or negative is the patients mood?
Answer these questions, because based on these,
your language, your words, and your tone of
voice will definitely change. With all this
understanding, it is also important that you keep
all of this in mind while preparing for your
OET. How you prepare for your OET test is very
important. One of the best ways to prepare well
is by undertaking professional training at a
