The OET comprises of four segments on which you
are tested listening, speaking, reading, and
writing. Every segment has its own kinds of
questions and tests, and different scoring
patterns. To be able to score well in your OET,
you must first understand what each segment is
about, and how it is assessed.
  • LISTENING
  • The listening section is further divided into
    three parts consultation extracts, short
    workspace extracts, and presentation excerpts.
    The traits that are assessed in the listening
    segment include
  • Capability of identifying specific and precise
    information
  • Efficiency of identifying the details
  • Determining the purpose of short excerpts
  • Ability of following a presentation on different
    healthcare topics
  • SPEAKING
  • To analyze a participants speaking skills, there
    are many role play exercises that are executed,
    which help analyze the following traits

  • Language fluency and speed
  • Pronunciation, vocabulary, and accent
  • Ease and comfort of explaining technical terms
    and medical matters
  • Understanding of patient perspective and needs
  • Appropriate, attentive, and respectful attitude,
    along with empathy
  • Proper use of questions, and usage of vague
    statements
  • Ability to summarize information
  • Logical and purposeful interaction organizing
    explanations in proper sequence, using the best
    techniques
  • READING
  • The reading section is divided into three parts
    expeditious reading, careful reading, and again
    careful reading. The expeditious reading task
    tests the ability of the participant to quickly
    scan through the text and locate specific
    information. The other two careful reading tasks
    assess the participants capability to identify
    specific details, main points, and summary of
    the text effectively in a given time. It also
    assesses the ability to identify meaning and
    opinion of the text given in the topic of
    healthcare.
  • WRITING
  • The writing segment has the participant to write
    a letter in 45 minutes, anything related to the
    discipline of healthcare. There is a lot that can
    be assessed with this one single letter. For
    example
  • Whether the task is fulfilled within the
    specified time
  • The organization, style, formality level, and
    tone of the content in the letter
  • Usage of correct grammatical structure and
    accuracy of the content
  • Punctuation and spelling correctness, along with
    letter layout
