Title: Everyday, people have to make quick decisions with little or no information. Often, when judging ano

1
The exercise
  • Everyday, people have to make quick decisions
with little or no information. Often, when
judging another person, you have to rely on
    instinct to guide your thinking.
  • You are about to be shown a series of faces and
asked to quickly rate these individuals
    abilities on a specific dimension.
  • Please be sure to answer questions using the
provided clickers. There are two parts to the
exercise, and the entire exercise will take about
    15 minutes.
  • You will not be asked to identify yourself and
your decision to participate or not participate
    will NOT affect your grade.

2
Section I Paired Comparisons
  • In this section, you will be shown a series of
    pairs of faces.
  • For each pair, you will be asked which candidate
    would be a better governor.
  • Each pair will only be visible for only one
second, after which you will have four seconds to
vote for either Candidate A or Candidate B.
  • If you think Candidate A would be a better
governor, click A on your clicker. If you think
Candidate B would be a better governor.
  • Make sure to pick one or the other, even if you
    are not sure.
  • Ready?

What was all that about?
This exercise is a continuation of an ongoing
project on the importance of candidates physical
appearance in their electoral success. So far,
there appears to be a strong relationship between
peoples gut reactions to candidates and how well
they do in elections. This relationship seems to
hold in countries as different as the U.S.,
Australia, Finland, and Mexico. Because we
want to capture peoples snap judgments, it was
important that you not be familiar with the
candidates. The photos you saw were from a
recent election in Brazil, where voters see
pictures of the candidates when they vote. We
will analyze the relationship between your snap
judgments of the candidates and how well they
actually did. We will then show the results in
class so you can see if your reactions actually
predicted candidates success at the polls.
