Creating a Podcast
  • By Samantha Kirch

Steps Educational Value Things to Consider
2
Steps
  • First, our group had to pick a topic from the
Virginia SOLs. We chose the 4th of July.
  • Next, we each wrote a part of the script. My part
was how the 4th of July is celebrated today.
  • After that, we brought our scripts to class and
    recorded our voices.
  • Then, we mixed all of the sound clips together to
    create our finished podcast.

Educational Value
  • The educational value of a podcast is unlimited.
Podcasts can be made by teachers to reinforce a
lesson. Or, a teacher can find an existing
podcast online, and have the students listen to
it to expand their learning. Finally, in higher
grades, students can create their own podcasts to
    further their understanding.
  • For students to create their own podcasts
involves patience, knowledge, and teamwork. These
are skills that are essential for students to
learn to be successful in podcast making and in
life. For students to make podcasts on their own,
and therefore learn these skills, is a worthwhile
    experience.

Things to Consider
  • Before taking on an assignment like this with
students, the teacher needs to consider
  • The students level of patience
  • The students level of computer knowledge and
    willingness to learn, and
  • The students knowledge of the subject they are
    making the podcast about.
  • In order for the podcast to be successful, the
teacher can tailor the experience to students of
different levels of patience and knowledge by
having them participate on just the easier and
more fun parts, such as recording their own
voices. Then, the teacher can take care of the
mixing and distributing of the finished product.
