    action to establish relationships with Prison
    Mental Health In-Reach Teams
  • This involved
  • Sourcing contact details of Prison Mental Health
    In-Reach Teams
  • Setting up meetings with local Prison Mental
    Health Team managers
  • Contacting Prisons further a field by telephone
    or e-mail
  • Prison Mental Health In-Reach Teams were keen
    to engage
  • Creation of Prison Mental Health Practice
    Development Network
  • Establishing Business Processes

Prison Sentencing Process The Benefits
  • Allows Prison Mental Health In-Reach Team to be
    aware of
  • risks and needs of the individual
  • medication the individual requires
  • professionals who have knowledge of the
    individual
  • Service Users and their families can have
    confidence knowing their treatment and
    care will be maintained whilst they are in prison
  • Community care co-ordinators can remain
    up-to-date with any significant events whilst the
    individual is in prison, such as
  • improvement / deterioration in mental health
  • advance notice of prison release date

Prison Release Process The Benefits
  • Allows Prison Mental Health In-Reach Team to
  • know who to contact prior to release
  • make joint arrangements as necessary
  • inform individual that arrangements are in
    place upon release
  • Service Users and their families can have
    confidence knowing that people on the outside
    do care and that help and support is awaiting
    them
  • Community care co-ordinators have confidence
    knowing that processes are in place to assist
    them, such as
  • advance notice of prison release
  • agreements with Housing Dept for homeless
    individuals
  • framework to support them
  • support of Forensic Social Worker

Prison Alerts
  • A Prison Alert is issued by a Mental Health
    In-Reach Team in instances where normal process
    cannot be maintained, these include
  • High security Prisoners
  • advance notice of any movement is not permitted
  • Transient Prisoners
  • a change of Prison may not be communicated
    immediately
  • Prisoners attending court
  • may be released without prior notice being
    given

MENTAL HEALTH
PRACTICE DEVELOPMENT NETWORK
  • The function of this group and its members is
    to
  • Maintain the agreed regional processes and
    procedures that support the CPA process.
  • Maintain the transfer mechanisms of information
    relating to prison sentencing and prison releases
    back into the community.
  • Share evidence based practice and innovative
    approaches experienced within individual
    establishments.
  • Inform the NIMHE Regional Development Centre of
    matters raised by the group as/when appropriate.
  • Educate colleagues within each members own
    organisation regarding information received from
    this group.
  • Support the continuing development of prison
    primary and secondary mental health care.
  • Share internal ways of working from each
    members own organisation and update the group as
    and when relevant changes are implemented.
  • Use knowledge and information gained from the
    group to support operational practice within each
    members own organisation.

Plans For The Future
  • Establish a Trust-wide process to support
    individuals involved in the criminal justice
    system. This would incorporate
  • NHS Trust
  • 6 Local Authorities
  • Initial Trust-wide meetings have agreed to this
    way of working in principal
  • Further work is required to determine the fine
    detail of a Trust-wide business process
